Havana's National Schools of Art. Preservation and reuse towards a conservation plan

This thesis proposes an architectural research on National Schools of Art of Havana. It investigates the history of the construction, use and degradation of the main buildings with a spirit of objectivity. The work starts from an evaluation of the current state, analysing the physical conservation of the building and bringing out for each of them the functional program, the permanent/temporary use and the material-structural decay also caused by the abandonment. The highlighting of critical issues and still unexpressed potentials of the site form a starting base on which it is possible to plan, for the first time, the recovery and reorganisation of the unused buildings and the park as elements which are part of a whole, in a global vision. The functional analysis is specified in the project for the recovery of the School of Music, called “Gusano”, showing a possible scenario of reuse and conservation of the abandoned building. The proposal is to reconfigure the building as students residence, with the intention to reclaim to a full use one of the symbols of neglect and unfinished that has affected this area for many years.

Questa tesi propone una ricerca architettonica sul complesso delle Scuole Nazionali d’ Arte de L’ Avana, investigando con spirito di oggettività la storia della costruzione, dell’uso e del degrado dei principali edifici che lo compongono. L’elaborato parte da una analisi dello stato attuale, analizzando la conservazione fisica delle architetture e facendo emergere per ciascun edificio il programma funzionale, l’uso permanente/temporaneo e il degrado materico-strutturale causato, anche, dall’abbandono. La messa in evidenza delle criticità e delle potenzialità ancora inespresse, concorrono a formare una base concreta su cui, partendo dall’attuale offerta formativa, si propone il recupero e la riorganizzazione degli edifici inutilizzati e del parco tramite una visione globale del complesso. L’analisi funzionale si precisa nella stesura di un progetto per il recupero della Scuola di Musica abbandonata, chiamata “Gusano”, determinando un possibile scenario di riutilizzo e conservazione tramite la riconfigurazione del manufatto in residenza per studenti, con la volontà di riportare al pieno utilizzo uno dei simboli dell’incuria e del non-finito che ha colpito per molti anni questa area.
