Today’s society is characterized by many urgent problems, including environmental degradation, overexploitation of natural resources and global warming, that are threatening the future of the world and the livelihood of the increasing global population. All these factors have started to gain the attention of society and governmental authorities towards the need of adopting more sustainable behaviours. As core actors within the societal context, manufacturing industries are increasingly required to operate in a more conscious way, coherently with the concept of Sustainable Development, that aims at satisfying the needs of present and future generations. The Circular Economy paradigm is gaining attention as an effective way to overcome the traditional linear patterns of production and consumption, which are responsible for many environmental and societal problems. When applied within the manufacturing context, the Circular Economy can be translated in innovative business models oriented towards the maximization of resource efficiency and the reduction of waste and polluting emissions, thus mitigating negative socio-environmental externalities, and guaranteeing at the same time profitable economic opportunities for businesses. Within this thesis, the Circular Economy paradigm has been explored with the specific aim of analysing its relationship with Sustainable Development. In particular, a framework has been developed to evaluate the contribution of Circular Economy in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda, promoted by the United Nations with the aim of engaging countries, governments, businesses and civil society towards the creation of a sustainable world, through the attainment of sustainability objectives related to the economic, social and environmental sphere. The study conducted, which relies on a structured literature review, shows that the application of Circular Economy, especially within the manufacturing sector, is a powerful strategy for addressing many of the SDGs. However, more effort is required on the side of policy-makers in order to facilitate the widespread adoption of Circular Economy.

Abstract
However, more effort is required on the side of policy-makers in order to facilitate the widespread adoption of Circular Economy.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
