Abstract
Italy’s urban growth was substantially impacted by railway infrastructure for the prime purpose of transportation of people and goods. As of today, with the rapid urbanisation, technological advancement, awareness in the society about environment, change in mobility by adopting faster and smarter ways of transportation, relocation and fragmentation of the industrial plants, the historic industrial heritage that is the railway in particular, is losing its “raison d’être” (reason to be). Since it is losing its reason to be, the railyards are abandoned or soon to be abandoned landscape. These landscapes are replete with meaning and yet, are deemed as undesirable in societies. Currently there is a substantial quantity of voids created due to railway abandonment in the Italian context and stating that this is a serious point of concern to be taken into consideration for rehabilitation for.
