Materia hub. riqualificazione dell'ex-fabbricato Cantiere Scuola e progettazione di un nuovo centro sociale

Matera, a city with a strong personality and a troubled history, was chosen as a case study for our thesis work due to its peculiar characteristics that led it, in 2019, to become the European Capital of Culture. "Open the future" is the slogan that guides the city through the whirlwind of changes that gives Matera the chance to develop new projects and rethink its historical core. Numerous archi-tectural contests were submitted for this purpose. From the web portal "Instaura” we have chosen, among many others, a competition of ideas aimed at the design of a Museum for Culture, a pole of interest on an urban scale that acts as an intermediary between the different eras. The participants were called to imagine a new Museum of Culture, a new center for the city that would summarize its traditions and aspirations, bringing together all those historical needs that make up the identity of the city. The space had to provided rooms for the display of the local crafts and educational workshops, in order to create a synthesis space between the traditions of the past and the new look towards the future that is characterizing the city of Matera.This competition was the starting point for this thesis project. However, we decided not to limit our-selves solely to the planning of an intervention that would satisfy the requests of the contest, but to make a wider proposal, redefining the buildings and spaces to be redeveloped; in particular the building Ex asylum Garibaldi and the building "Cantiere scuola".The space occupied by the first building will be redefined with new volumes and forms that will give life to a new social center; recreational, educational and informational functions will be contained in the new spaces. Furthermore, this new construction was born as an urban-scale connection, which leads to an improvement of the accessibility in the city of Matera. The same purpose also inspired the design of the building "Cantiere scuola". This one was not meant to be demolished but refurbished through interventions of consolidation and restoration, aimed at restoring the original state of this historic building. On the inside there will be exhibition spaces, where guests can learn about the culture, art and crafts of Matera and also learn as much as possible about the city itself. The architectural image of the buildings is conceived as a modern reinterpretation of the traditional architectural forms of Matera, to establish a link between the past and the present of the city.

Matera, città dalla personalità forte ed una storia travagliata, è stata scelta come caso studio per il nostro lavoro di tesi per le sue peculiari caratteristiche che l’hanno portata, nel 2019, a diventare Capitale Europea della Cultura. «Apri il futuro» è lo slogan che guida la città attraverso il turbine di cambiamenti che dà a Matera la possibilità di sviluppare nuovi progetti e ripensare il suo nucleo storico. Numerosi sono stati i bandi di concorso nati a tale scopo. Dal portale di restauro e recupero "Instaura" abbiamo scelto, tra i tanti, un concorso di idee volto alla progettazione di un Museo per la Cultura, un polo di interesse a scala urbana che faccia da tramite tra le diverse epoche. I partecipanti erano stati chiamati ad immaginare un nuovo Museo della Cultura, un nuovo polo per la città che ne riassumesse le tradizioni e le aspirazioni, mettendo insieme tutte quelle istanze storiche che compongono l'identità della città. Lo spazio prevedeva la realizzazione di sale per l'esposizione dell'artigianato locale e laboratori didattici, al fine di creare uno spazio di sintesi tra le tradizioni del passato e il nuovo sguardo verso il futuro che sta caratterizzando la città di Matera.Tale competizione è stato il punto di partenza per questo progetto di tesi. Tuttavia, abbiamo deciso di non limitarci unicamente alla progettazione di un intervento che soddisfacesse le richieste del bando di gara, ma di fare una proposta più ampia, ridefinendo, a seguito di sopralluoghi nella città, gli edifici e gli spazi da sottoporre a riqualificazione; in particolar modo l’edificio Ex asilo Garibal-di e il fabbricato “Cantiere scuola”. Lo spazio occupato dal primo edificio, verrà ridefinito con nuovi volumi e forme che daranno vita ad un nuovo centro sociale; funzioni ricreative, educative e informative saranno contenute nei nuovi spazi. Inoltre questa nuova realizzazione nasce come collegamento a scala urbana, che porta un miglioramento dell’accessibilità nella città di Matera. Con lo stesso intento viene trattato anche l’e-dificio del “Cantiere scuola”. Si è scelto di sottoporre quest’ultimo ad interventi di consolidamento e restauro, volti a ripristinare lo stato originario di questo edificio storico. Al suo interno verranno definiti degli spazi espositivi in cui gli ospiti potranno conoscere la cultura, l’arte e l’artigianato di Matera e anche imparare il più possibile sulla città stessa. L’immagine architettonica degli edifici è concepita come una reinterpretazione moderna delle forme architettoniche tradizionali di Matera, a sancire un collegamento tra il passato e il presente della città.
