The theme of the project is primarily the creation of an economically sustainable educational farm. This project is based on the desire of the members of the Friends of St. Francis Association to improve the living conditions of children and the general population of the town of Nchiru, Kenya. The whole initiative originates from the will of Franco Keller, who through the non-profit organization Amici di San Francesco, IML Group and the Rotary Club Vimercate, has always supported and promoted this initiative over the years. Over time this non-profit organization has gone from a simple financial aid to an organized structure: it has many volunteers in its ranks, who find themselves in Brianza to plan and organize construction, travel, fundraising, voluntary and support initiatives. This energy and desire to do has also been transferred to Kenya, where with the support of the local curia and priests, it has been able to give birth to a reality that has allowed over the years to save many children from the plague of hunger and drugs: the St. Francis Village of Meru. The mission that began in 2005 was to solve a serious problem: the toxic dependence of children abandoned by their families in the county of Meru, a city about 200 km away from the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. In fact, in order not to feel and fight the pangs of hunger and the hardships of a misery life, these children abuse glue and sometimes fossil fuels, such as aircraft fuel. Year after year, reality has continued to grow and expand, saving more and more people from the street from the street and giving them the opportunity to learn a profession thanks to the schools set up within the village itself. The activities of the Association had such a resonance that the children to be helped made the average presence of children around 400, with peaks of almost 600 children in the most difficult periods. Hence the need to provide for the nourishment and supply of basic necessities to all these children, it has become essential to find a local source of money and food. The next step that all the actors involved in this reality have set themselves, is to make the St. Francis Village a totally independent structure from external financing, including their own. For this reason, in collaboration with the Diocese of Meru, they managed to take over land for free, 30 km from the village, in Chaaria, in order to make you build a farm to make the surrounding land productive and generate profit. The problem, however, was how to manage all the different activities on distant lands and with the market closest to more than 20 km of distance on rough and almost impassable roads during the rainy season. For this reason, the representatives of the Association asked us to be willing to help them in their mission by designing a solution suited to their needs.
