This research focuses on the specific area of storage facilities in art museums. The consideration and management of storage facilities is becoming a distinguishing theme of the fruition of museums and their role in contemporary society. It is estimated that in about 60% of institutions worldwide, the storage area conditions are so devastating that it has become impossible to use the collection for any future museum activity. Scanning and assessing the existing literature on museum storages reveals a highly limited exercise, especially in Italy. While the bibliography on set-ups and museum exhibits is quite varied, the research on deposits is in fact quite few. Museum storage facilities are multifunctional spaces linked to conservation, research and valorisation of collections; therefore, if they are not properly organised, they can prevent the development of these crucial activities. This work highlights the role of storage facilities in art museums today and their evolution over the last ninety years. The author shows, through the case studies, how the deposit has assumed a fundamental role in the museum transformation since the beginning of the 20th century, highlighting the pros and cons of varying approaches. Moreover, through the examples of several Italian and foreign museums, the thesis demonstrates the changes and transformations deposits have undergone and how they have been reduced or enlarged, both internally and externally. The originality of this work has been the collection of data and implementing the research (through archival documents, personal inspections and interviews with professionals) in order to provide a first understanding of the Italian context regarding art museums’ storage facilities (with in-depth analysis of autonomous state museums), a work never before proposed or carried out.
Il tema della ricerca riguarda i depositi per la conservazione delle opere nei musei d’arte. La consapevolezza dell’importanza di questi spazi e della loro gestione, in funzione della tutela e valorizzazione dei beni, sta diventando un tema discriminante sulla fruizione del museo e sul suo ruolo nella contemporaneità. Si ritiene che in circa il 60% delle istituzioni di tutto il mondo le condizioni dei depositi museali siano così devastanti da rendere completamente inaccessibile la collezione per qualsiasi attività museale. L'analisi della letteratura ha evidenziato fin dall’inizio la scarsità di studi specifici sul tema dei depositi, sulla loro formazione e evoluzione nel tempo, specialmente in Italia. Mentre la bibliografia sugli allestimenti e le esposizioni museali è varia, quella sui depositi è estremamente limitata. Questi spazi multifunzionali sono legati alla conservazione, alla ricerca e alla valorizzazione e pertanto, se non organizzati e messi a sistema, impediscono lo svilupparsi di tali attività. In questo lavoro è stato messo in luce il ruolo dei depositi nei musei d’arte oggi e la loro evoluzione negli ultimi novanta anni. L’autrice dimostra attraverso i casi studio come il deposito ha assunto un ruolo fondamentale nella trasformazione museale sin dall’inizio del Novecento evidenziandone i pro e i contro. Inoltre, attraverso l’esempio di alcuni musei italiani e stranieri viene dimostrato come i depositi abbiano subito delle trasformazioni e si siano ingranditi, sia internamente sia esternamente. L’originalità dello studio è dovuta a una loro classificazione, alla raccolta dati e all'implementazione della ricerca (attraverso documenti d'archivio, ispezioni personali e colloqui con professionisti) al fine di fornire una prima comprensione e di descrivere lo stato dell’arte riguardante i depositi dei musei d'arte in contesto italiano (con approfondimento ai musei statali dotati di autonomia speciale): un'opera finora mai realizzata.
