In this work we investigate the generation, transport and detection of spin-polarized electrons in Ge-based structures. The theoretical concepts about the optical spin injection in semiconductors, spin transport and spin-charge interconversion are reviewed, as well as the state-of-the-art techniques for the optical investigation of the spin-related properties of solids. We demonstrate that optical investigation is a convenient tool to gain insight into the physical mechanisms governing the spin transport. The employed geometries allow probing the spin-related phenomena taking place in Ge or in Ge-based structures. We experimentally show that Ge is a suitable hosting material for spintronics since it allows for both an efficient generation of spin-polarized carriers and spin transport over long distances. Our results pave the way to the realization of ferromagnet-free spintronic devices.

Abstract
Our results pave the way to the realization of ferromagnet-free spintronic devices.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
