Tourism analysis on a large scale using mobile location data

Mobile phones today represent an important source of information for studying people behaviors and for monitoring different phenomena such as public transportation, social networks and tourism. The interest in the use of the data generated by mobile phones is growing quite fast, also thanks to the development and the spread of phones with sophisticated capabilities. In particular, this source of information provided a new and effective way to measure and understand the mobility of the people at different spatial granularity, and it can be used on different scenarios by public authorities in order to improve the quality of service they provide. In this thesis, such a kind of data is leveraged in order to describe a tourism phenomenon by means of anonymous and aggregated KPI’s. In particular the author analyzed data of the Sardinia region in August 2018.

I telefoni cellulari oggi costituiscono un’importante fonte di informazioni che permettono di studiare il comportamento delle persone, nonché il monitoraggio di diversi fenomeni come trasporto pubblico, reti sociali e turismo. L’interesse per l’uso di dati generati da telefoni cellulari sta crescendo molto velocemente, anche grazie allo sviluppo e alla diffusione di telefoni con capacità tecnologiche sofisticate. In particolare, questa sorgente di informazione rende disponibile un modo nuovo ed efficace di misurare e comprendere la mobilità delle persone a diversi livelli di granularità spaziale e può essere usato dalla autorità pubbliche al fine di migliorare la qualità dei servizi offerti. In questa tesi, tale tipologia di dati è utilizzata per descrivere un fenomeno turistico attraverso KPI’s aggregati ed anonimi. In particolare, l’autore ha preso in considerazione dati riguardanti la regione Sardegna nel mese di Agosto 2018.
