This study presents a comprehensive description of the current situation on packaging components and materials. Starting with the Group’s commitment to use 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging by 2025, an evaluation tool was set-up containing physico-chemical parameters for its 1991 own-brand products within the Italian perimeter during 2017 and 2018. Total Solid Waste (TSW) generated due to Primary Packaging (PP) for the first year was 19549 t and 20373 t, for the second. There is no packaging increment variation from one year to another, in fact, only 1,04% is the difference in weight. In the TSW, it was found out that PET 01 bottles are the ones with the major fraction(31,6%), followed by 12,1% of 3D -HDPE 02 constituents; 23,59% belongs to the glass fraction, while 9,91% to paper & cardboard and 3,15 % to metals. There is a 25% increment on using FSC certified components, whereas there is a slight growing-tendency, represented by the 2%, to use compostable packaging items. Secondary Packaging (SP) is mainly conformed by carton (62 %) and PVC 03 films (38%) for PGC products, while for PFT-BIO reusable PP 05 boxes are being used which means a reduction of more than 50% on SW due to SP. The aim of the project was to characterize and quantificate the TSW, to identify the top-offender materials and to create an Action Plan which will lead the Group towards a Circular Economy.
