A new way of living in Barcelona. Transformation and re-use of a building as social housing in Via Laietana

The following thesis of Laura Magistrale develops a project proposal for the transformation and re-use of a current office building as a social housing in Barcelona, Spain. The subject of the thesis and the materials related with the building taken from a competition called “BSH - Barcelona Social Housing”, realized by ARCHmedium, an organization that arranges architectural competitions for students and young architects since 2009. Competition is realized in 2017 and already finalized. The topic of this thesis has based on a real social problem of today, right to adequate housing. Barcelona, has being faced with housing emergency because of the increase on housing prices and rents. This situation is pushing the people with limited economic conditions out of the city. The design proposal aims to enhance the social housing idea by creating a strong sense of a community and exploring a new way of design based on the needs of the users and their life quality. Users of the social housing has been the focus point of the design process. They have been categorized based on their needs and common history to be able to make them feel content and gave them a chance to socialize with their neighbors as much as possible. This design is suggesting a community which they will be understood and feel comfortable without any taboos. The project proposes different social functions in order them to improve their skills and heal their traumatic experiences. The building in Via Laietana 8-10, designed by the architect Francesc Guàrdia i Vidal in 1923, with its original use as a residential building. Today the building is used as an administrative building. This proposal aims to bring the building to its original function. Through the design process, attention and respect for the architectural heritage had been sustained carefully by keeping the facades and structure as it is and creating a new environment inside the old envelope. This project is creating a new and modern way of living inside of a historical, monumental building in the heart of the city with its community.

Il seguente lavoro di Tesi Magistrale sviluppa una proposta progettuale per la trasformazione e il riutilizzo di un edificio per uffici in un complesso di social housing a Barcellona, in Spagna. L'oggetto della tesi e i materiali relativi all’edificio sono tratti da un concorso denominato "BSH - Barcelona Social Housing", realizzato da ARCHmedium, un'organizzazione che dal 2009 bandisce concorsi di architettura per studenti e giovani Architetti. Il concorso è partito nel 2017 ed è già stato finalizzato. Il tema di questa tesi si basa su un reale problema sociale di oggi, il diritto a un alloggio adeguato. Barcellona ha dovuto affrontare l'emergenza abitativa a causa dell'aumento dei prezzi delle case e degli affitti. Questa situazione sta spingendo le persone con condizioni economiche limitate a stabilirsi fuori dalla città. La proposta progettuale mira a migliorare l'idea di social housing creando un forte senso di comunità e esplorando un nuovo modo di progettare, basato sulle esigenze degli utenti e sulla loro qualità di vita. Gli utenti del social housing sono stati il punto focale del processo di progettazione. Sono stati categorizzati in base alle loro esigenze e alla loro storia comune in modo tale da poterli far sentire soddisfatti e dare loro la possibilità di socializzare il più possibile con i loro vicini. Questo progetto suggerisce una comunità nella quale sentirsi compresi e a proprio agio senza tabù. Il progetto propone diverse funzioni sociali al fine di migliorare le abilità e guarire le esperienze traumatiche degli utenti. L'edificio in Via Laietana 8-10, è stato progettato dall'Architetto Francesc Guàrdia i Vidal nel 1923 come edificio residenziale. Attualmente l'edificio è utilizzato come edificio amministrativo. Questa proposta mira a riportare l'edificio alla sua funzione originale. Attraverso il processo progettuale sono stati attentamente sostenuti l'attenzione e il rispetto per il patrimonio architettonico, mantenendo le facciate e la struttura così come si presentano oggi e creando un nuovo ambiente all'interno dell’involucro originario. Questo progetto propone così un modo nuovo e moderno di vivere all'interno di un edificio storico e monumentale, nel cuore della città e con la sua comunità.
