Promoting cleantech start-ups through crowdfunding

In recent years, climate change has attracted more and more attention among people from all over the world, who are becoming more informed and sensitive about the potential harmful consequences it may cause on the environment and our health. The current global warming trend is significant, because most of it is extremely likely to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and it is proceeding at an unexpected and unprecedented rate. One of the main contributions in mitigating the dangerous effects of climate change may come from the energy sector, considering that energy production and use are the largest source of global greenhouse gas emissions. Although the United Nations, for the first time, in the Sustainable Development Goals recognize clean energy as one of the key elements that will allow to reach a more sustainable future for all by 2030, the interest that this sector is raising among investors is not reflecting this path: from the analysis of recent trends of traditional sources of investment in the renewable energy sector, it is possible to notice that it has attracted a lower amount of capital compared to previous years, mostly due to the unattractive long-time horizons that characterize this kind of investment. A potential complementary source of funding to the traditional ones could be crowdfunding online platforms. The urgent need of producing clean energy technologies and sustainable solutions turns into the creation of projects from all over the world, which often lack of initial capital to turn their projects into reality. Crowdfunding has recently started to show its potential in supporting projects that present sensitivity to topic which are on the focus of public attention and may attract a huge number of investors. This is the case of clean energy-related start-ups. It is interesting to check the accessibility and potential of this new source of funding for cleantech start-ups in their early stages, considering the decreasing trend of other funding mechanisms and, at the same time, the crucial role of the renewable energy sector in reducing and moderating the harmful effects of climate change.

Negli ultimi anni, il cambiamento climatico ha attirato un’attenzione sempre maggiore tra la popolazione globale, che sta diventando sempre più informata e sensibile alle potenziali dannose conseguenze che potrebbe causare all’ambiente e alla nostra salute. L’attuale andamento del surriscaldamento terrestre è molto significativo, poiché in gran parte causato dall’attività umana da metà del XX secolo e si sta incrementando con una velocità inaspettata e senza precedenti. Uno dei contributi maggiori nel mitigare gli effetti dannosi del cambiamento climatico potrebbe derivare dal settore energetico, considerando che la produzione e l’uso di energia sono la causa dell’emissione della maggior quantità di gas serra. Nonostante l’Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite nella sua Agenda 2030 per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile abbia, per la prima volta, riconosciuto il ruolo cruciale delle energie rinnovabili nel raggiungimento di un futuro più sostenibile per l’intera popolazione mondiale entro il 2030, l’interesse che questo settore sta suscitando tra gli investitori non riflette queste necessità: dall’analisi dei recenti andamenti delle tradizionali forme di investimento, emerge quanto il settore energetico abbia attratto meno capitale rispetto agli anni passati, principalmente a cause dei lunghi tempi richiesti per rendere questi investimenti remunerativi. Un potenziale meccanismo di finanziamento, complementare alle forme tradizionali, potrebbe essere il crowdfunding. L’urgente bisogno di utilizzare energie rinnovabili e soluzioni sostenibili si manifesta nella nascita di progetti da tutto il mondo, che spesso necessitano di capitale iniziale per dar vita alle loro idee. Il crowdfunding ha iniziato a mostrare il suo potenziale nel supportare progetti che presentano sensibilità ad argomenti che si trovano al centro dell’attenzione pubblica e che potrebbero quindi attrarre un elevato numero di finanziatori. Questo è il caso delle start-ups che promuovono progetti legati al settore dell’energia. Sembra quindi necessario investigare sull’accessibilità e il potenziale di questa nuova forma di finanziamento, considerando la diminuzione di interesse da parte dei tradizionali meccanismi di finanziamento e, allo stesso tempo, il ruolo cruciale del settore energetico nel mitigare gli effetti del cambiamento climatico e che non puo’ quindi essere trascurato.
