Plan B. Weaving and twisted jewelry with Japanese bamboo basket art

When Japan opened up to the world in the middle of the 19th century, Western merchant ships were quick to return home with exotic art from the once-reclusive nation. The private galleries and curiosity shops of London and Paris were flooded with Japanese woodblock prints, calligraphy and ceramics. But one traditional art form was conspicuous absence -- woven bamboo baskets. Under the influence of Western culture and artistic aesthetics, Japanese bamboo design has been gradually affected and developed constantly. It has evolved, after the inheritance and innovation of several generations. Eventually, Japanese basket art had a unique artistic style which is different from China and other Asian countries. In 1982, when Issey Miyake brought his rattan and bamboo bodice and hat to the runway of his spring collection. It suddenly got to the dramatic high point of the show and quickly amazed the Whole New York. In 1988, the Museum of Cultural History at the University of California at Los Angeles held the first exhibition in the United States of Japanese bamboo art. Llyod Cotsen, an admirer and collector of Japanese bamboo baskets. Mr. Cotsen was an important lender to this groundbreaking exhibition. The museum also published the first book in the West on Japanese bamboo art. Since then, the aesthetics of Japanese bamboo art has come into public view in western countries. And it continuously becomes inspirations for the designers. In this thesis, I will start from the history of the modern Japanese bamboo basket, appreciate the representation of the masterworks. And then understand the processes of the bamboo basket making, analyze the characteristics of bamboo basketry, and then study from the bamboo basketry design cases in fashion and jewelry design, aim to create a unique and innovative jewelry collection with the features and aesthetics of Japanese bamboo basket art.
