Abstract
The theme of the heritage recovery in relation to the environmental sustainability and social issues of our cities, emerges more and more in the public debate and in the architectural one. Although the practice of renovating historical buildings has very ancient origins, this method is translated today into new opportunities for developing reflections and experiment it. In the debate between the old and the new, deeper attention must be paid to the conception of a complex functional program that meets local needs and those of contemporary society. In response to the need to transforming an industrial area within the urban and consolidated fabric of the historic centre of Mantua, the thesis aims to investigate the design possibilities of the ex "Officine del Gas" area, located within the UNESCO perimeter. Based on the ideology of the "mixed and shared" city as opposed to zoning and sprawl, the project plans to establish a dialogue between the existing architectural components and those of new construction, to create multifunctional spaces for the community. Research on urban morphology has led to the creation of a unique functional program for this historic city. The S.H.A.R.E. project performs two main functions (Social Housing and Atelier of REcycling) and three other support functions (urban gardens, educational spaces, offices) linked together by the reuse and the recycling of waste materials. The functions of each building are closely related to each other in a positive relationship of dependence. The virtuous circle that the project aspires to generate puts man at the centre, the citizen, the fuel of this urban productive area.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
