Upcat. A modular shelter solution for the unowned cats in urban spaces

A work is presented here that has the objective of designing and building a shelter for unowned cats in the urban space, with the aim of improving the relationship between humans and animals and minimizing the environmental impact. This is an open source project that is created to be freely accessible for other users who can adapt and / or change it according to their needs, from the available spaces to the number of cats present. The groups to which the project is aimed are different: from non-governmental organizations for animal welfare, to municipal organizations and individual persons or groups of volunteers who take care of the cats residing in their area. The product described in this document was designed to be built locally, minimizing materials, machines and production processes. Particular attention was also paid to the assembly process of the structure, which allowed both to simplify the task of the assembler and to create a safe and protective product for the cat. Being modular, the shelter is able both to accommodate all the cats present in a colony, and to be adapted to the space available: the modules can in fact be added, removed or repositioned according to the needs. The fundamental objective of the shelter is to offer a practical solution for both cats and humans who share the same urban spaces, with the intention of promoting a positive image of felines and encouraging people to be unanimously involved in well-being of their community cats.

Viene presentato in questa sede un lavoro che ha avuto l’obiettivo di progettare e costruire un rifugio per gatti senza proprietario con lo scopo di migliorare la relazione tra uomo-animale e minimizzare l’impatto ambientale. Questo è un progetto open source, ovvero creato per essere di libero accesso per altri utenti che possono adattarlo e/o cambiarlo a seconda delle proprie esigenze, dagli spazi a disposizione al numero di gatti presenti. I gruppi verso cui il progetto è rivolto sono diversi: dalle organizzazioni non governative per il benessere degli animali, alle organizzazioni comunali e le singole persone o gruppi di volontari che si prendono cura dei gatti che risiedono nella propria zona. Il prodotto descritto in questo documento è stato progettato per essere costruito localmente, riducendo al minimo i materiali, le macchine e i processi di produzione. Particolare attenzione è stata inoltre prestata al processo di assemblaggio della struttura, ciò ha permesso sia di semplificare il compito dell’assemblatore sia di creare un prodotto sicuro e protettivo per il gatto. Essendo modulare, il rifugio è in grado sia di accogliere tutti i gatti presenti in una colonia, sia di essere adattato allo spazio a disposizione: i moduli possono infatti essere aggiunti, rimossi o riposizionati a seconda delle esigenze. L’obiettivo fondamentale del rifugio è quello di offrire una soluzione pratica sia per i gatti che per gli umani che condividono gli stessi spazi urbani, con l’intento di promuove un’immagine positiva dei felini ed incoraggiare le persone ad essere unanimemente coinvolte nel benessere dei loro gatti comunitari.
