Kyokan. Emotional design for visually impaired people

I have chosen the theme of blindness not because it is personally close to me, but because I find this reality fascinating: “not seeing”, or rather “seeing” with the other senses. A particular experience has corroborated my interest in this subject. I have taken part in it last year, in the Institute of Blind People of Milan: I’m talking about “Dialogue in the Dark”. There, they have artificially reproduced the absolute darkness, which was so murky that I couldn’t see my hands. It was a darkness to which we are not used, because in our daily life, most of the time there is a source of light even if pale. When I decided to dedicate myself to this thesis, I turned again to the Institute of Blind People of Milan. In this way, thanks to the precious advices of one of their blind guides, Elisabetta, and thanks to the information material I have consulted, I have traced a more restricted sector of study within the wide thematic of blindness: the interpersonal relationships among blind people and sighted people. Therefore, this thesis intends to help blind people to perceive the facial expressions of their interlocutors, of their emotions, those which are expressed not in words, but just with the facial gesture, like a smile. The aim is not only the realisation of a collection, that is comfortable both in shapes and textiles, but also the realisation of an accessory in which it is possible to insert a micro-camera: it will intercept the facial expressions of the person with whom the blind user is communicating, transmitting them in the form of vibrations to the garment he/she is wearing. The first part of the thesis is essentially a research phase, which deals with the wider theme of visual impairment, exposing an overview on the situation in Italy and around the world. Then it focuses on the relationships among sighted people and blind people and on the way a visually impaired organises his/her wardrobe. The second part of the thesis is hinged on the project phase: starting from unsighted people’s needs, I have defined the project requirements that lead to the analysis of micro-cameras and haptic interfaces, and then to the realisation of the collection.

Mi sono accostata alla tematica della cecità, non tanto perché mi sia personalmente vicina ma perché trovavo affascinante questa realtà: il non vedere, o meglio, “vedere” con altri sensi. Ciò che ha corroborato il mio interesse per questo tema è stata un’esperienza molto particolare, cui ho preso parte lo scorso anno: Il Dialogo Nel Buio, presso l’Istituto dei Ciechi di Milano. È qui che viene artificialmente riprodotto il buio assoluto, così torbido da impedire la vista della propria mano anche avvicinandola agli occhi aperti. Un buio a cui non si è mai abituati, poiché quasi sempre vi è una fonte di illuminazione, anche se flebile. Quando ho scelto di dedicarmi a questa tesi, mi sono rivolta nuovamente all’Istituto dei Ciechi di Milano e, grazie ai consigli di una delle loro guide non vedenti, Elisabetta, e al materiale letto, sono andata a tracciare un settore di indagine più ristretto all’interno dell’ampia tematica della cecità: le relazioni interpersonali tra vedenti e non vedenti. Questa tesi si propone di consentire ai non vedenti di percepire le espressioni facciali dei loro interlocutori e, dunque, le loro emozioni, quelle che non si esprimono a parole ma con la semplice mimica del viso, come un sorriso. L’obiettivo non è soltanto la realizzazione di una collezione, che sia confortevole nelle forme e nei tessuti, ma anche di un accessorio in cui integrare una fotocamera che intercetti le espressioni del volto della persona con cui il non vedente sta comunicando e trasmetterle sotto forma di vibrazioni all’indumento che si sta indossando. La prima parte della tesi è prettamente una fase di ricerca, che tratta il tema più vasto della cecità, esponendo una rapida panoramica sulla situazione in Italia e nel mondo, per poi focalizzarsi sui rapporti tra vedenti e non vedenti e sulle abitudini vestimentarie dei non vedenti. La seconda parte della tesi è imperniata sulla fase progettuale: a partire dai bisogni dei non vedenti, individuati nella sezione di ricerca, si passa a definire dei requisiti di progetto, i quali conducono a un’analisi di microcamere e interfacce aptiche, per giungere poi alla realizzazione della collezione e dunque, dell’obiettivo finale.
