Venice is a city that has long attracted people, with its cultural value and historic significance. However, in current times Venice is also a city that faces certain problems. The biggest among them is paradoxically one of its greatest blessings – a tourism. The enormous flow of tourists makes the city very hard to live. With its loss of identity and rising rent fees the city experiences the continuous decline of local population becoming a kind of Disneyland. Another big problem Venice chases is the pollution from heavy industries and industrial spaces within the historical fabric and the mainland, shipping, and boat traffic congestion, as well as damages caused by wakes and wave collision with foundations and ongoing water level increase. Taking the before mentioned problems into consideration, a possibility for a starting solution point can be found in one location that reflects most of the issues within a single area. With a careful analysis of a number of location possibilities, the former provides a problem worth digging deeper and exploring though research at a higher level of a master thesis. Moreover this area has the possibility of engaging of issues of urban morphology within a historic city and with strategies for innovative and alternative modes of living. With drawing from the historical scenario of the traditional Venetian configuration of the insula with its urban elements of campo/calle/canal etc and from the more contemporary and international scenario of the Giudecca housing projects, this alternative scenario for the Actv area in Sant’Elena will be an answer to the challenge of designing modern architecture within an urban and natural environment strongly characterized by traditional and historical elements. The design process will explore the relation between water and land, re-shaping and rethinking the use of existing canals between Sant’Elena and Giardini, as well as the connection to surrounding islands, and culminate with a design not only for transformation, but also preservation and issue solving processes. As it was mentioned before, the primary key issues to be addressed by this project include population decline, the subdued nature of Sant’Elena and the impact of the former industrial use. The aim of this project is to create permanent housing (with temporary housing areas), to primarily serve local residents, which consists of: architecture design of affordable housing with boat spaces for local people, housing for national and international artist and architects working on exhibitions at the Giardini area and habitable spaces which would be used for students and other academics involved in specific creative workshops. Moreover, another key aspect is to improve connectivity of this area to other insulas, introducing a commercial aspect that promotes local services related to the people living and/or working there, possibly providing venues in certain areas that can be used in relation to the Biennale and local events and last but not least, introducing new green spaces and other strategies which benefit the current pollution problem in Venice. The new Sant’Elena Neighbourhood will be a new blend of the traditional Venetian style of architecture within a modern design and would serve as a new paradigm for revitalizing the city in the eyes of the inhabitants.

Abstract
The new Sant’Elena Neighbourhood will be a new blend of the traditional Venetian style of architecture within a modern design and would serve as a new paradigm for revitalizing the city in the eyes of the inhabitants.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
