Relationship between ancient and new in Arona. A palimpsest design of ancient wall of castle

This summary covers the restauration, conservation project and reuse of an ancient wall on Rock of Arona, previously a part of the ancient castle of Arona. Our project aim is to reinstate the previous historical glory of the ancient castle remains and with it the glory of the past. We hope that after our intervention through the re-design, people who come here could feel the history of this place in this new space and also, could feel the charm of its age. Thus, the historical and architectural significance of the existing remains will become productive drivers of design. Reusing and protecting the castle as an attractive landscape of Arona is an important question. To answer this question, the concept of architectural palimpsest was introduced to the design formula. Introducing the Palimpsest concept into the design formula allowed us to look at the structure-building relationship from a new perspective. From this concept the ancient wall was treated as an architectural piece from which, how to maintain and the reinforcement inherent qualities of the same, begins to define the design intervention from a completely different point of view. Therefore, our goal is for the new structure of the Rocca di Arona to follow its twin, Fortress of Angera in its glory on one side, to preserve its historical values and show its stories through the concept of transparency.
