Aleppo. A design proposal for a rehabilitation city center

The battle for Aleppo raged for over five years, coming to an end in December 2016 and leaving behind nothing but ruins and corpses. People are getting back to their home city, finding no place to stay. 52% of the city’s housing stock was reported damages and 140,000 workers in the industrial sector lost their jobs causing a huge decline in the economy. In addition, 45% of the touristic activities stopped, and a number of unrivaled handcrafts vanished. The old damaged city needs to be healed, as well as all its inhabitant. The project is located in the Farafira area, facing the Citadel from the North. This area was famous for its mixture of functions (residential. Touristic, commercial, and educational). Preserving the same identity, the project is composed of different functions. A post war museum and workshops for local crafts are facing the Citadel. It is connected to the extension of the old souq “Suwayqet Ali” by a new souq, having introvert residential building on both sides, and all adapted to disabled people. The last part of the project consists of a rehabilitation center, helping people overcome the postwar trauma, and serving all disabled and handicap affected by the war.

La battaglia per Aleppo imperversò per oltre cinque anni, giungendo al termine nel dicembre 2016 e lasciando dietro di sé solo rovine e cadaveri. Le persone stanno tornando nella loro città natale, non trovando alcun posto dove stare. Il 52% delle abitazioni della città è stato segnalato come danni e 140.000 lavoratori nel settore industriale hanno perso il lavoro causando un enorme declino dell'economia. Inoltre, il 45% delle attività turistiche si è fermato e un numero di lavori manuali ineguagliati è scomparso. La vecchia città danneggiata deve essere guarita, così come tutti i suoi abitanti. Il progetto si trova nell'area di Farafira, di fronte alla Cittadella dal nord. Questa zona era famosa per la sua combinazione di funzioni (residenziale, turistica, commerciale ed educativa). Preservando la stessa identità, il progetto è composto da diverse funzioni. Un museo post-bellico e laboratori per l'artigianato locale si trovano di fronte alla Cittadella. È collegato all'estensione del vecchio suq "Suwayqet Ali" da un nuovo suq, con un edificio residenziale introverso su entrambi i lati e adattato alle persone disabili. L'ultima parte del progetto consiste in un centro di riabilitazione, che aiuta le persone a superare il trauma del dopoguerra e serve tutti i disabili e gli handicap colpiti dalla guerra.
