The evolution of the designer’s discipline means that over the years every historical moment is characterized by different ways of approaching it. Today this discipline is more and more transversal and full of different competencies made to coexist and collaborate in order to create value. The role of the designer is, therefore, something transversal today: teams of heterogeneous designers with different backgrounds interface with customers who are increasingly aware of the potential of collaboration between the parties. In this scenario, small and medium-sized design studios are changing the way they work, the tools and the approaches that enable effective collaboration. The studio based in Copenhagen Eskild Hansen is one of those actors where the growth of the studio’s skills and the new way of dealing with customers lead to the need to make more clarity on the fundamentals of the methodology of this studio. The term methodology summarizes in a single word a set of concepts and practices capable of expressing how a design studio behaves within a precise context. The aim of this thesis is the realization of an outset methodology for small and medium-sized studios with the consequent design of a tailor-made methodology for the Danish studio Eskild Hansen. A methodology which is able to systematize tools and methods in order to simplify the design process and improve the cohesion between the studio members as well as the alignment with the client. The first part of the thesis contains research divided into four main themes. The research was initially conducted based on methodologies and teaching approaches combined with an analysis of some of the major American consultancy companies that since the nineties have made methodology their strong point. The success of these American agencies and their Anglo-Saxon methodologies has today created a blooming of new methodologies that have been taken into the analysis to define the strengths that can be used within minor studies such as that of Eskild Hansen. From this point on, the exam has been extended to all the key points of the methodology. The second part has as its main theme an examination of the processes that have characterized the discipline of design in the last forty years. The structures and temporal successions that have been developed to help the designer’s role in prioritizing and understanding the succession of tasks. The third segment of the research phase focused on the analysis of tools and methods used in the academic and professional fields. All those elements considered facilitators for the design and management of the process. Each of these points led to conclusions and interpretations capable of defining the key points of an adaptable basic methodology. Following this phase, the fourth and final point of the research section is composed of a series of interviews with experts in the field and specialists. These interviews made it possible to better understand the way of working in various design studios. Furthermore, the work carried out concerning the basic methodology was submitted to some of the interviewees and reviewed in order to further improve it. This has been a crucial step for the development of my thesis. Thanks to presentations and workshops with the studio Eskild Hansen, we were able to facilitate the creation of a tailor-made method capable of enhancing the quality of the studio. The second part of the thesis is developed in four main phases that describe the project carried out for Eskild Hansen. The first phase is that of describing the design activity, which includes an analysis of the studio, a series of workshops and tests that were able to allow the creation of the methodology together with the members of the team. The second part summarizes the final output designed for the studio. A proprietary methodology composed of principles, guidelines, processes, tools, and methods that characterize the studio. A chapter is dedicated to the iteration of this project and the fundamentals that rule the future of this project. Lastly, the comments summarize the impact of this project (albeit at an early stage) in the first weeks of testing, the opinions of the team and their clients who came into contact with it. The last section deals with the conclusions that include the most interesting insights gained from this project, personal comments and overall how this type of thesis can be exploited on a professional level.
