Memoriae iconema (The iconic meaning of Memory) - Virgilian culture as places connector Only through Memory you can outline the History, using material, oral or written traces. Nevertheless, in a designer daily life activity, every creative idea comes from Memory, as a continuous dialogue. This thesis is a research regarding the relationship between the Project and the Memory; thus analyzing the links - from chronological, artistic and architectural points of view – that establish between history and places. The research has been conducted both in desk mode - using digital and paper documents and bibliography – both applying direct experience on the field, thanks to interactions with local decision-makers, at municipal and district level, all of them involved in a call devoted to a new qualification of the “Forte di Pietole”. The candidate had the opportunity of directly facing with stakeholders, thus permitting visits in the field- even though access is generally forbidden- and having a look on the essays and materials already prepared for the new functions of the specific place. The candidate approached and tried to compare several current and past projects designed by different personages, thus leading to different project results. This process enables to the growing willingness, to revitalize – with a logic of growing functional implementation - abandoned contexts, felt as obsolete and not used. Thus the thesis is focused on the relationship between Place and Memory, with the aim of retraining a cross-section of “Forte di Pietole”, a 19th-century fortress that plays an important role within the archeological context of Mantua and its environs. The issue of the Memory is deeply linked with the opportunity to design, exploiting the literary culture that characterizes the whole Mantua’s territory; furthermore, the figure of Virgilio, an ancient roman poet born in Mantua, embodies a silent guide for discovering and participating to these locations and their new functions. The local community and the visitors have a prominent role within a polyhedral system, that ties up with the urban historical center of Mantua, leaving unchanged all its own bucolic characteristics. The interest for this topic is part of a wider context, promoted when the Municipality of Borgo Virgilio shared its willingness to retrain and give new functions to the “Forte di Pietole”, the ancient Andes, Publio Virgilio Marone’s hometown. Analyzing the site at the moment, it is clearly understandable how the Virigilian Culture, despite its connections with the context, is gradually disappearing, together with the traces and fragile indicators of previous periods. The assessment of the relationship between Memory and Space, through the design implementation, started with the purpose of revitalizing the heritage of the fortress, involving the local community as a key player, to make use an active conservation of this cultural good. The following essay, a design for new qualification of fortress, represents a prominent outlook for all the abandoned buildings of the specific area. The task is to create a new context, that enables educational and creative workshops, to be closer with the Virgilian Nature; thus retrieving ancient crops and practices, together with the diffusion of agricultural products coming from the original rural landscape. The project, in its versatility, embodies a wide range of functions and provides open spaces for cultural, literary and musical activities, as well as the main role of a museum area, focused on the “Forte di Pietole” and the big connecting subject of Memory.
