Re-writing Aleppo. The reconstruction of the city centre

The city of Aleppo, a milestone of Islamic architecture, a connection point from the Middle East and Europe, a commercial hub since the Hellenistic era, has been hit by one of the bloodiest battles of modern history. Much of the city has been devastated, about 60% of the Old City is severely damaged, about 30% has been totally destroyed. Today, at the end of the Civil War the question is how and what to rebuild, particularly in the Old City that is still able to reveal the succession of different cultures, archaeological sites and monuments bond by a complex identity, resulting in approximately five thousand years of social evolution. The Souk Area, the beating heart of the city, is one of the most damaged historical sites of the city and this thesis aims to formulate some hypotheses about reconstruction of this area. The final result of this process is the architectural project. A long series of analyses and theoretical formulations defines a practical approach that is able to provide an adequate response to the theme of reconstruction in such a complex context, and at the same time that it is able to respect social identity and cultural character of this place. The ambition is to provide a conscious and coherent response that can heal the wounds caused by the civil war.

La città di Aleppo, pietra miliare dell’architettura islamica, punto di connessione da Medioriente e l’Europa, snodo commerciale sin dall’epoca ellenistica, è stata colpita da una delle più cruente battaglie della storia moderna. Buona parte della città è stata devastata, circa il 60% della città vecchia è severamente danneggiata, circa il 30% è stato distrutto. Oggi, alla fine di questa guerra ci si pone la domanda di come e cosa ricostruire, in particolare nella città vecchia che è ancora capace di mettere in mostra la successione di culture diverse, siti archeologici, monumenti e un’identità complessa, risultato di circa cinque mila anni di evoluzione sociale. L’area del suq, il cuore pulsante della città, è uno dei siti storici maggiormente colpititi e questa tesi si pone l’obiettivo di formulare alcune ipotesi sulla ricostruzione di questo sito. Il risultato finale di questo processo è il progetto architettonico. Una lunga serie di analisi e formulazioni teoriche va a definire un approccio pratico che sia in grado di fornire una risposta adeguata al tema della ricostruzione in un contesto così complesso, e al tempo stesso che sia in grado di rispettare l’identità sociale e le caratteristiche culturali del luogo. L’ambizione è quella di fornire una risposta cosciente e coerente che riesca a rimarginare le ferite causate dalla guerra civile.
