Cooper Union. Il progetto della nuova sede

The project area available for the construction of the new Cooper Union head office is a square-shaped lot of about 30 per 30 meters, at the corner of Second Avenue and Seventh Street, and only one block away from the other two buildings of the university. Given the little space offered in width and length, it becomes necessary to develop the project in height. Hence, the idea of a "vertical campus" arose, to accommodate in it all the functions required by the university. To this purpose, we have developed the project into three distinct bodies with different aims and, therefore, different characteristics. The first, intended to accommodate the classrooms, is the largest of the three and is placed in the southern corner of the lot. The central body, set back from the external border, is the smallest; it constitutes the entrance of the building on the ground floor and serves as an atrium in all other floors. The third is the narrower and mainly hosts the services and the distribution. Each of the three is designed with a different structural conception, which determines their different architectural language. The entire building rises for 14 floors up to a height of about 70 meters.

L’area di progetto a disposizione per l’edificazione della nuova sede della Cooper Union è un lotto di forma quadrata di circa 30 metri per 30, all'angolo tra la seconda avenue e la settima street e ad un solo isolato di distanza dagli altri due edifici dell’università. Dato il poco spazio utilizzabile in larghezza ed in lunghezza, diventa necessario sviluppare il progetto in altezza. Da qui è nata l’idea di un “campus verticale” che possa ospitare al suo interno tutte le funzioni richieste dall’università. Per farlo abbiamo sviluppato il progetto in tre corpi distinti con destinazioni e, quindi, caratteristiche diverse. Il primo, destinato ad accogliere le aule, è il più grande dei tre ed è posto nell’angolo sud del lotto. Il corpo centrale, arretrato rispetto al confine esterno, è il più piccolo; costituisce l’ingresso dell’edificio al piano terra e funge da atrio in tutti gli altri piani. Il terzo è il più stretto ed ospita principalmente i servizi e la distribuzione. Ognuno dei tre è progettato con una concezione strutturale diversa che ne determina il linguaggio architettonico differente. L’intero edificio si eleva per 14 piani fino ad un’altezza di circa 70 metri.
