Coworking spaces and social streets : sense of community and urban environment

Modern lifestyle and technological progress have changed people’s attitude to the notion of work and life, making it possible to work individually and flexibly in co-working organizations (CSs) or makers spaces (including Fab Labs) and giving opportunity not being attached to the specific place to live. This new trend of switching preferences from fixed traditional working places to sharing flexible ones and travelling around the world to find perfect place to live will consequently influence the way people use urban spaces as well as their behavior patterns. Within this framework the current thesis aims at exploring the effects of CSs on the urban context in Italy, their relationship with Social Streets (SoSts) and whether and how SoSts affect the urban environment. Besides, a specific focus on the SoSts phenomena in Milan is placed and its impacts on the sense of belonging in the neighborhood are explored. The first part of the thesis is theoretical and provides a literature review, giving an overview of the factors enhancing the rising of CSs and SoS phenomena. Moreover, a definition of co-working spaces and social streets is introduced, and the research regarding these phenomena described. The second part is dedicated to investigating the effects of CS and SoS on the urban environment and neighborhood community in Italy. In order to attain this goal, quantitative face-to-face and online interviews have been conducted at the neighborhood level in Milan. Specifically, managers of Social Street groups and the residents have been interviewed. In the final part, based on the analysis of the survey results, the conclusion concerning the effects of CSs and SoSts on Milan urban environment is discussed.

Lo stile di vita moderno e il progresso tecnologico hanno cambiato l'atteggiamento delle persone verso la nozione di lavoro e vita, rendendo possibile lavorare individualmente e in modo flessibile in “co-working space” (CS) o in “maker space” (Fab Lab) e dando l’opportunità di non essere vincolati al posto specifico in cui vivere. Questa nuova tendenza nel cambiare le preferenze dai luoghi di lavoro tradizionali fissi a quelli condivisi flessibili e di viaggiare in tutto il mondo per trovare il luogo perfetto dove vivere influenzerà di conseguenza il modo in cui le persone utilizzano gli spazi urbani così come i loro modelli di comportamento. In questo quadro, la tesi attuale mira ad esplorare gli effetti dei CS in Italia sul contesto urbano e nello specifico il loro rapporto con le Social Street (SoSts) all'interno dell'ambiente urbano. Inoltre, viene inserito uno specifico focus sui fenomeni SoSts e vengono studiati i suoi impatti sul senso di appartenenza nel quartiere di Milano. La prima parte della tesi è teorica e passa in rassegna la letteratura esistente, offrendo una panoramica sulle moderne condizioni di vita che hanno contribuito alla comparsa dei fenomeni di CS e SoS. Inoltre, viene introdotta una definizione di spazi di “co-working” e “social street”, fornendo la ricerca riguardante questi fenomeni. La seconda parte è dedicata allo studio degli effetti di CS e SoS sull'ambiente urbano e sulla comunità di quartiere in Italia. Al fine di conseguire questo obiettivo, sono state condotte interviste quantitative faccia a faccia e online a livello di quartiere a Milano. Nello specifico, saranno intervistati i manager dei gruppi di Social Street e i residenti. Nella parte finale, basata sui dati valutati raccolti, viene fornita la conclusione relativa alla possibile influenza di CS e SoS per l'ambiente urbano di Milano.
