Construction engineering is a complex and multifaceted discipline, characterized by innumerable aspects and facets, as many as its fields of application, pertaining to the urban context, with an extensive potential to make this branch of engineering among the largest and most ancient documentable. The structural engineer is increasingly required, in particular, to express his own judgment regarding the efficiency of existing structures, since, in Italy, most of the buildings took place in the first half of the 1900s. In this thesis, the original calculations and design report of the pier n°9 of Polcevera Viaduct of Morandi will be revisited. The aim is to show how, in the ‘60s, in order to design such a complex structure, Morandi to perform the structural analysis could use only his experience and the Principle of Virtual Works. The structural analysis process took a long time, and was prove to calculation errors. At present, by means of a PC and a structural analysis software package, the same structure can be analyzed in a few minutes, after a couple of days for the F.E.M. mesh input. Finally by comparing the original results of Morandi with the F.E. modelling, the differences are shown to be negligible. Morandi was a great Engineer.

Abstract
Morandi was a great Engineer.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
