Abstract During the last years parametric design has been interesting for Contemporary Architecture. The 21st century brought parametric as a new global design to representation architecture. Meanwhile searching for new geometrical innovations has been the greatest interest for contemporary architects. With the aid of various designing facilities, parametric architecture has begun to present new discourse in architecture. The purpose of this study is to show this kind of architectural design can be present as an innovation route in Persian Architecture and using its facilities and tools can it take an action in conveying Persian Architecture concepts. Persian architecture is characterized by geometry of patterns and shapes, which can be analyzed through mathematical equations. Geometry is one of the main features in formation of Persian architecture. It means research in Persian architecture geometry is impossible without being familiar with geometry. Beside 2D patterns, many of the traditional geometric ornaments are realized on 3D surfaces such as domes or vaults. Also, Persian Literature and poetry are mainly addresses the 3D problem by means of a 2D scheme, which is an important and synthetic representation but is not exhaustive and lacks clarity. This work proposes a framework based on the integration of 2D and 3D drawings, as in the traditional approach, to study and analyses its modular design and hierarchy of elements. As a case study, Muqarnas in entrance of Shah mosque,Isfahan., Iran, is considered. The result is a link between the 3D patterns and the geometry of architectural elements, which completes and overcomes their schematic 2D representation. This study can be accepted as a preliminary step of more complicated forward studies for innovative designs with historical patterns.
