Amore vacui. The void as an urban regenerator, Haifa, Israel

Indroduction There is an uncountable number of abandoned buildings around the world. Nowadays, a lot of pro- jects are creating new uses inside the abandoned buildings in order to reuse the place and so the cities. However, sometimes, the places are not abandoned and some human activites reveals that something is happening inside: the place has became a place for spontaneous activities and unplan- ned encounters, a VOID of the planned city. This democratic space, instead of being deleted for the allocation of new uses inside the building, can become the starting point of the urban regeneration of its context. Amore Vacui, “the love for the void” is a work based in the urban analysis, urban diagnosis, theore- tical approach, and urban proposal in the city of Haifa, Israel. The purpose of this thesis is discovering, analysing and showing the potential of a new kind of public space arising in an abandoned area in Haifa, defined as “the void”, a place where espontaneous actions and encounters are happening. In this way, the project aims to propose a Masterplan that is sensitive with the existing urban logic of the void and that connects it with the city. This thesis is a work realized with the collaboration of professor Orit Shmueli from Technion University (Israel).

Esiste un numero innumerevole di edifici abbandonati in tutto il mondo. Oggigiorno, molti progetti stanno creando nuovi usi all'interno degli edifici abbandonati per riutilizzare il luogo e quindi le città. Tuttavia, a volte, i luoghi non vengono abbandonati e alcune attività umane rivelano che qualcosa sta accadendo all'interno: il luogo è diventato un luogo per attività spontanee e incontri non pianificati, un VUOTO della città pianificata. Questo spazio democratico, invece di essere cancellato per l'assegnazione di nuovi usi all'interno dell'edificio, può diventare il punto di partenza della rigenerazione urbana del suo contesto. Amore Vacui, "l'amore per il vuoto" è un'opera basata sull'analisi urbana, sulla diagnosi urbana, sull'approccio teorico e sulla proposta urbana nella città di Haifa, in Israele. Lo scopo di questa tesi è scoprire, analizzare e mostrare le potenzialità di un nuovo tipo di spazio pubblico che sorge in un'area abbandonata di Haifa, definita come "il vuoto", un luogo in cui avvengono azioni e incontri spontanei. In questo modo, il progetto mira a proporre un Masterplan che sia sensibile alla logica urbana esistente del vuoto e che la collega alla città. Questa tesi è un lavoro realizzato con la collaborazione del professor Orit Shmueli della Technion University (Israele).
