Il Palazzo Giardino di Sabbioneta. La costruzione e l'uso attraverso le fonti d'archivio

The thesis investigates the history of the construction and use of the Palazzo Giardino, also called Casino di Sabbioneta from the mid-sixteenth century to the present day, through the analysis of the bibliography and documentary sources. The Palace was the site of the Prince's otium and to date has had a minor role in the literature and studies on the history of the small city state. The thesis reconstructs the urban and political story of Sabbioneta, starting from the figure of Vespasiano Gonzaga Colonna, to whom we owe the foundation of the Palazzo Giardino and the design of the Piazza d’Armi. The central body of the thesis analyzes the constructive vicissitudes and uses of the Palazzo Giardino comparing them to the historical moment of reference. Finally, it traces the long decline of the duchy by analyzing the consequences on the Palace. The collection and interpretation of documents is supported by graphic drawings illustrating the transformations of the Palace and its use.

La tesi indaga la storia della costruzione e dell’uso del Palazzo Giardino, detto anche Casino di Sabbioneta dalla metà del Cinquecento ai giorni nostri, attraverso l’analisi della bibliografia e delle fonti documentarie. Il Palazzo fu il luogo dell’otium del Principe e sino a oggi ha avuto un ruolo minore nella letteratura e negli studi sulla storia della piccola città stato. La tesi ricostruisce la vicenda urbana e politica di Sabbioneta, a partire dalla figura di Vespasiano Gonzaga Colonna, al quale si deve la fondazione del Palazzo Giardino e il disegno della Piazza d’Armi. Il corpo centrale della tesi analizza le vicende costruttive e gli usi del Palazzo Giardino rapportandoli al momento storico di riferimento. Infine, ripercorre il lungo declino del ducato analizzando le conseguenze sul Palazzo. La raccolta e l’interpretazione dei documenti è supportata da elaborati grafici che illustrano le trasformazioni del Palazzo e del suo utilizzo.
