Railway as a heritage. A reuse proposal for Tehran-Gorgan route

To begin to understand heritage and the issues surrounding its meanings and values, it becomes necessary to understand its background and roots. Each heritage has its own story which build up with different layers like history, context, architecture, and people. The main aim of this work is to represent Railways and train as one of the most important exciting industrial heritage which had great role in 19th century to what we call our modern life now. The first parts of the thesis focused on the different angles of railways history and architecture and analyses many case studies around the world to define the railways and all its detail as heritage with their own stories. By using the story of railway as heritage and creating a new interpretation (a story inside a story) this thesis tries to bring a fresh and new definition of how to look at a system or a building as a heritage and represents how the definition of a heritage could change by passing time. The project illustrates the railway not only as system for transport peoples and goods, which was the main point of its creation about 200 years ago, but as an experience machine. The story inside the railway story wants to allow the participants themselves to define and shape heritage as they understand and value it. So the users would be a part of process to construct a new story.

Per iniziare a comprendere il patrimonio e le questioni che lo circondano, diventa necessario comprenderne il background e le radici. Ogni patrimonio ha la sua evoluzione che si costruisce attraverso diversi livelli come la storia, il contesto, l'architettura e le persone. L'obiettivo principale di questo lavoro è quello di rappresentare le Ferrovie e la loro formazione come uno dei più importanti ed entusiasmanti patrimoni industriali del XIX secolo, che hanno avuto un grande ruolo nel definire lo scenario del nostro contemporaneo. La prima parte della tesi si è concentrata sulla storia e l'architettura delle ferrovie e ha analizzato molti casi di studio in tutto il mondo per inquadrare la ferrovia e le sue caratteristiche come parte del patrimonio. Proponendo una lettura di tipo narrativo (una storia dentro una storia) questa tesi cerca di suggerire un nuovo approccio per considerare la ferrovia non solo come sistema di trasporto di persone e merci, che è stato lo scopo principale della sua creazione circa 200 anni fa, ma come una macchina dell'esperienza. Il racconto all'interno del racconto ferroviario intende consentire ai partecipanti stessi di definire e plasmare il patrimonio come lo capiscono e lo valorizzano.
