Enhancing the metropolis through the reshaping of its hinge points. Case study : London-Woolwich

The purpose of the thesis is to show how is possible to enhance the metropolis, the most complex form of city, through the reshape of its hinge points, the areas where the links and connections at different scales find their place. The case study of this metropolitan project is the district of Woolwich in Greenwich, London. The project starts from the individuation of the links and missing connections at different scales between the infrastructures that forms this congested hinge point of the metro-matrix. Considering all the elements forming the shape and the metabolism of the city, the chosen strategy is to adapt the project and the metropolitan development to the environment. All the interventions and the project choices have been made considering the modifications already planned for that part of the city of London, trying to create a solution that will be up to date even in the future scenario of the metropolis.

L’obiettivo della tesi è di mostrare come sia possibile sviluppare e potenziare la Metropoli, la più complessa forma di città, attraverso la trasformazione dei suoi punti cardine, le aree di collegamento e connessione tra scale differenti. Il caso studio di questo progetto metropolitano è il distretto di Woolwich a Greenwich, Londra. Il progetto inizia dall’individuazione dei collegamenti e delle connessioni mancanti a scale differenti tra le infrastrutture che formano questo punto cardine congestionato della metro-matrix. Prendendo in considerazione tutti gli elementi che concorrono a formare il metabolismo della città, la strategia scelta è di adattare il progetto e lo sviluppo metropolitano all’ambiente. Tutte le scelte di progetto sono state fatte considerando lo sviluppo programmato per quest’area di Londra, nell’ottica di proporre una soluzione progettuale coerente con il futuro scenario della metropoli.
