Amor fati. Forma urbis Sagunti

Sagunto shows itself as the result of a stratification of historical periods, so dense that it is difficult to distinguish the remains. In this thesis project the Roman layer is isolated and studied both in its singularity and in its relationship with the previous and subsequent transformations of the city. The project's development is based on the reconstruction of the Forma Urbis Sagunti between the Republican era and the Imperial era. Through the study of this complex and incomplete system, due to the fragmentary nature of the data, it was possible to identify the significant points of the urban fabric and on which it was first necessary to intervene to reinsert them completely into the context that generated them. The project therefore focuses on two different areas, considered fundamental to start a wider action that involves and enhances the entire heritage. The first intervention is in the area of the Roman Forum, the administrative and religious center of the Roman city, located inside the Castle. Nowadays the ruins are not exploited, the only interventions carried out are limited to information panels that report the arrangement and identification of the remains and reconstructive hypotheses. The second intervention concerns the ruins of the piles of the Roman bridge, the main access to the city in the Republican era. This construction is of particular importance because from this point it was possible to admire the entire hill of the Castle and the architectural composition given by the combination of the Theater and the Forum. For this reason the two interventions, although divided and distant, prove to be intrinsically correlated.

Sagunto si presenta come il risultato di una stratificazione di epoche storiche, tanto fitta da rendere difficile la distinzione dei resti. Nell’ambito di questo progetto di tesi la soglia romana è stata isolata e studiata sia nella sua singolarità che nel suo rapporto con le precedenti e successive trasformazioni della città. Premessa allo sviluppo del progetto è stata la ricostruzione della Forma Urbis Sagunti tra l’epoca repubblicana e quella imperiale. Attraverso lo studio di questo sistema complesso e incompleto, per la frammentarietà dei dati pervenuti, è stato possibile identificare quali fossero all’interno della città i punti notevoli del tessuto e su quali fosse innanzitutto oppurtuno intervenire per reinserirli compiutamente nel contesto che li ha generati. Il progetto si concentra dunque in due differenti ambiti, ritenuti fondamentali per dare avvio ad un’azione a più ampio raggio, che coinvolga e valorizzi l’intero patrimonio. Il primo intervento si colloca nell’area del Foro romano, centro amministrativo e religioso della città romana, situato all’interno del Castello. Ad oggi le rovine non sono valorizzate, gli unici interventi realizzati si limitano a pannelli informativi che riportano la disposizione e l’identificazione dei resti e le ipotesi ricostruttive. Il secondo intervento interessa le rovine delle pile del Ponte romano, principale accesso alla città in epoca repubblicana. Questa costruzione risulta di particolare importanza perchè da questo punto era possibile ammirare l’intera collina del Castello e l’imponente composizione architettonica data dall’accostamento del Teatro e del Foro. Per questo motivo i due interventi, seppur divisi e distanti, si dimostrano intrinsecamente correlati.
