BIM and construction. A tool for site management

The topic of BIM has found more and more interest and consensus in the construction sector worldwide; in some countries it has become the most widely used practice in the construction process, in others there are still critical issues regarding its adoption. The state of the art of BIM in the world is analysed through laws and decrees of the various states, paying particular attention to the Italian situation, which in recent years has seen progress in the BIM adoption process. The interest in BIM is also analyzed through tools such as Google Trend and Scopus, which show a steady growth of interest in BIM. Through Scopus, a database of scientific articles and publications, we have analyzed within the BIM world which are the macro-themes that present a limited body of publications and research on the subject. The theme of the application of BIM technologies in the field is still the subject of limited theoretical studies which, moreover, denounce an even smaller number of practical applications. Four case studies are analyzed where BIM technologies are used on site, trying to understand how they can improve productivity during the construction phase and which critical points are hidden behind their use. From this analysis we have developed two questionnaires, one addressed to companies in the sector and one to students, in order to understand respectively how BIM in Italy is permeated in work practice and how Italian universities prepare their students for the technological revolution that is affecting the construction sector. From the results of the questionnaires, one obtains an overview of the BIM situation and its application on site in Italy: criticalities, development, potential.

Il tema del BIM ha trovato sempre più interesse e consensi nel settore delle costruzioni in tutto il mondo; in alcuni paesi è diventata la pratica maggiormente utilizzata nel processo di costruzione, in altri invece sussistono ancora criticità riguardo la sua adozione. Si analizza lo stato dell’arte del BIM nel mondo attraverso leggi e decreti dei vari stati ponendo particolare attenzione alla situazione italiana che ha assistito, negli ultimi anni, ad un progresso nel processo di adozione BIM grazie alla pubblicazione di decreti e normative. L’interesse nei confronti del BIM è inoltre analizzato attraverso strumenti come Google Trend e Scopus, che testimoniano una crescita costante dell’interessamento nei confronti del BIM. Attraverso Scopus, database di articoli e pubblicazioni di carattere scientifico, abbiamo analizzato all’interno del mondo BIM quali sono i macro-temi che presentano un limitato corpo di pubblicazioni e ricerche a riguardo. Il tema dell’applicazione di tecnologie BIM in cantiere è ancora oggetto di limitati studi teorici i quali, inoltre, denunciano un numero di applicazioni pratiche ancora minore. Si analizzano quattro casi studio in cui vengono utilizzate tecnologie BIM in cantiere, cercando di capire in che modo queste possono migliorare la produttività durante la fase di cantiere e quali criticità si nascondono dietro il loro impiego. Da questa analisi abbiamo sviluppato due questionari, uno indirizzato alle aziende del settore e uno agli studenti universitari, al fine di comprendere rispettivamente come il BIM in Italia sia permeato nella pratica lavorativa e come le università italiane preparano i propri studenti alla rivoluzione tecnologica che sta interessando il settore delle costruzioni. Dai risultati dei questionari, si ottiene una visuale della situazione BIM e della sua applicazione in cantiere in Italia: criticità, sviluppo, potenzialità.
