Culture and education center in Sedhiou

Sèdhiou is a southwestern city of Senegal and stands on the right bank of the Casamance river. The design of a cultural center for this city was the subject of the Kaira Looro competition in 2018 and it is from this theme that the thesis developed. Then, studying the history, the characteristics and above all the uses and customs of Sèdhiou, it was possible to highlight the needs, problems and potential of the city, in order to intervene on a wide scale throughout the territory. The cultural center was located in an unpublished area overlooking the river, immediately adjacent to the port area, thus becoming a new city gate. It is a building made with natural materials, available directly on site and designed following the footsteps of the native architectural tradition. In fact, the structure provides an impluvium, that is a space with a terraced basin dedicated to collecting rainwater but which can also be used as a meeting place and rest area. Furthermore, the general analysis has highlighted the lack of relationship between the city and the river, although this is fundamental for the commerce and the activities of the inhabitants, as well as for the natural and landscape wealth that it offers. The territorial strategy was therefore focused on the creation of a route along the bank that connected the main poles therein: the hotel, the port, the market and the main hotel. The peculiarity of the route is its geometric shape but not totally regular that develops itself modeling and widening in the points where the territory allows it, to form paved areas that serve as public meeting spaces. At the new cultural center, or almost at the center of the path, the pavement of the walkway incorporates that of the building, thus creating a system that animates the entire coastal strip of the city.

Sèdhiou è una città del Senegal sudoccidentale, capoluogo della regione e del dipartimento omonimi e sorge sulla sponda destra del fiume Casamance. La progettazione di un centro culturale per questa città è stata oggetto del concorso Kaira Looro per l’anno 2018 ed è proprio da questo tema che si è sviluppata la tesi. Studiando poi la storia, le caratteristiche e soprattutto gli usi e i costumi di Sèdhiou si sono potute mettere in luce quelle che sono le necessità, i problemi e le potenzialità della città, in modo da intervenire ad ampio raggio su tutto il territorio. Il centro culturale è stato collocato in un’area inedificata prospiciente il fiume, immediatamente adiacente alla zona del porto, costituendosi così come nuova porta della città. Si tratta di un edificio realizzato con materiali naturali, reperibili direttamente in loco e progettato seguendo le orme della tradizione architettonica autoctona. La struttura infatti prevede un impluvium, ovvero uno spazio dotato di una vasca gradonata dedicata alla raccolta dell’acqua piovana ma utilizzabile anche come luogo di ritrovo e sosta. L’analisi generale, inoltre, ha evidenziato il mancato rapporto tra città e fiume, nonostante questo sia fondamentale per il commercio e le attività degli abitanti, oltre che per la ricchezza naturale e paesaggistica che offre. La strategia territoriale è stata quindi incentrata sulla realizzazione di un percorso lungo l’argine che collegasse i poli principali ivi presenti: l’albergo, il porto, il mercato e l’hotel principale. La particolarità del percorso è la sua forma geometrica ma non totalmente regolare che si sviluppa modellandosi e allargandosi nei punti in cui il territorio lo permette, a formare aree pavimentate che fungono da spazi pubblici di ritrovo. In corrispondenza del nuovo centro culturale, ovvero quasi al centro del percorso, la pavimentazione della passerella ingloba quella dell’edificio, creando così un sistema che anima l’intera fascia costiera della città.
