Urbanization and climate change are fundamental (interrelated) trends currently transforming the way we live on the planet;. Nigeria is no exception. Sustainable solutions are required to absorb and manage this explosive growth and to negate the massive impact the built environment has had on the natural environment. There is need to start respecting natural systems and learning from ecological processes to create a better balance between human need and the wider environment. Cities rarely get the chance to be designed from scratch. However, an emerging metropolis like Abuja could become a test bed for emerging urban theories. Project The project is centred around the design of a training camp for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, Abuja. The NYSC scheme was set up by the government to involve Nigerian graduates in nation building and the development of the country. The orientation camp is an enclosed military controlled facility that is self sufficient and with a high population density and could pose as “a city within a city” According to Pedro B. Ortiz in his book, The Art of Shaping the Metropolis, when involved in a transformation of settlements at the fringes of a metropolis such as Abuja, characterized by constant change and informality, it is necessary to start by defining the contemporary city within this context. This thesis investigates how the NYSC camp can be used as a performance ground to explore how biological processes can be applied to develop a model of a resilient city, employing self organization as a strategy for sustainable growth while providing a built environment that responds to immediate regionals conditions such as climate, culture and geography.

Abstract
This thesis investigates how the NYSC camp can be used as a performance ground to explore how biological processes can be applied to develop a model of a resilient city, employing self organization as a strategy for sustainable growth while providing a built environment that responds to immediate regionals conditions such as climate, culture and geography.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
