Sustainable regeneration of post-industrial landscapes. Local strategies for the city of Ayvalik

In the industrial cities of Europe and Turkey, the inner city production activities have been relocated from the city centers to the outside of the city due to changing needs (logistic,technological) and environmental problems. This has led to the emerge of industrial brown fields, which have become the spatial waste in city centers. Instead of solving the problems arising from the production model, zoning strategies that separates the functions have been implemented. However, with the Urban Symbiosis Model that has been adopted by many industrial cities in Turkey and Europe the production and brownfields are re-integrated to urban metabolism with more sustainable ways. Likewise, the Local Production Clusters of today, provided spatial cooperation in the city with different functions and they have adapted to the needs of developing creative and information sector. In this thesis, it is aimed to reintegrate the brownfield areas of Ayvalık -Turkey's one of the most important olive production centers- to the urban system. For this purpose, the spatial and functional relations between the old industrial clusters in the city center and the urban structure have been analyzed. Based on the results of analyzes, local strategies have been developed within the framework of Urban Symbiosis and Local Production Cluster models to produce of functioning space from waste space and to produce products from waste material collected from city. With this strategy, it is expected that the spatial and functional sustainability of abandoned buildings will provided in social, cultural, economic and ecological terms.

Nelle città industriali dell'Europa e della Turchia, le attività produttive del centro città sono state trasferite dai centri urbani verso l'esterno della città a causa delle mutevoli esigenze (logistiche, tecnologiche) e ambientali. Ciò ha portato all'emergere di aree industriali dismesse, che sono diventate lo spreco spaziale delle città. Invece di risolvere i problemi derivanti dal modello di produzione, sono state implementate strategie di zonizzazione che separano le funzioni. Tuttavia, con il modello di Simbiosi Urbana adottato da molte città industriali in Turchia e in Europa, la produzione e le aree dismesse sono reintegrate nel metabolismo urbano con modalità più sostenibili. Allo stesso modo, i Cluster di Produzione Locale di oggi hanno fornito una cooperazione spaziale nella città con funzioni diverse e si sono adattati alle esigenze di sviluppo del settore creativo e informativo. In questa tesi, si intende reintegrare le aree dismesse di Ayvalık -uno dei più importanti centri di produzione di olive della Turchia- al sistema urbano. A tal fine, sono state analizzate le relazioni spaziali e funzionali tra i distretti industriali abbandonati e la sistema urbana. Sulla base dei risultati delle analisi, sono state sviluppate strategie locali nel quadro dei modelli di Simbiosi Urbana e Cluster di Produzione Locale per produrre spazio funzionante dallo spazio di scarto e produrre prodotti dai materiali di scarto raccolti dalla città. Con questa strategia, si prevede che la sostenibilità spaziale e funzionale degli edifici abbandonati sarà fornita in termini sociali, culturali, economici ed ecologici.
