Tua Raiz. A winery in the Douro valley

Douro valley is the place where Por- to wine was born and is still produ- ced. The local inhabitants started this process 2000 years ago. Sin- ce the beginning of the XIX century, this product has become worldwi- de famous for its taste and quality. This ancient tradition of viticulture has produced a cultural and human landscape of outstanding beauty that reflects its technological, social and economic evolution. For this re- ason, since 2001 the Douro region has been under the UNESCO World Heritage List. This value, during the years, encouraged a lot of people to invest in this place and buy a piece of it. Unlike the past, nowadays custo- mers come mostly from not-Euro- pean countries that means that this region is taking more and more im- portance in the worldwide scenario.The aim of this project is to give, through this architecture, a chance to fully live the place, always protecting the beauty of the lanscape, its “fun- ction”, i.e. the wine production. With this design I would like to pro- pose a project which is different from the typical idea of winery, using a language that takes really care of the spaces and of the perception that every room has to offer, giving also the possibility to enhance the touri- stic features the site now presents. The study proceeds with a big con- centration on the construction sy- stem and on the choice of the mate- rials; both steps have been analysed and developed keeping always in mind the importance of this unique landscape.

La valle del Douro è il luogo in cui il vino Porto è nato e prodotto. Gli abitanti locali hanno iniziato questo processo 2000 anni fa. Sin dall'inizio del XIX secolo, questo prodotto è diventato famoso in tutto il mondo per il suo gusto e la sua qualità. Questa antica tradizione di viticoltura ha prodotto un paesaggio culturale e umano di straordinaria bellezza che riflette la sua evoluzione tecnologica, sociale ed economica. Per questo motivo, dal 2001 la regione del Douro è stata inserita nell'elenco del patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO: questo valore, nel corso degli anni, ha incoraggiato molte persone a investire in questo posto ed a comprarne un pezzo. A differenza del passato, oggigiorno i clienti provengono principalmente da paesi non europei, il che significa che questa regione sta assumendo sempre più importanza nello scenario mondiale. Lo scopo di questo progetto è di dare, attraverso questa architettura, un'opportunità di vivere il posto, proteggendo sempre la bellezza del paesaggio e la sua "funzione", cioè la produzione del vino. Con questo lavoro mi piacerebbe proporre un progetto diverso dall'idea tipica della cantina, usando un linguaggio che prenda veramente cura degli spazi e della percezione che ogni stanza ha da offrire, dando anche la possibilità di enfatizzare il turismo locale. Lo studio procede con una concentrazione sul sistema costruttivo e sulla scelta dei materiali; entrambi i passaggi sono stati analizzati e sviluppati tenendo sempre presente l'importanza di questo paesaggio unico.
