The gateway. Elsassersstrasse 156. Offices and laboratories for Novartis Campus

The “ELSASSERSTRASSE 156”, the meeting point between the public city of Basel and the private Campus of Novartis. An innovative Campus as Novartis has everything to show how a corporate Campus should be. Let’s think of an efficient Urban space, a context with parks, rivers, industries and a place that is a playground for famous Architects; Basel is holding a strategic Campus, thanks to the master plan designed by Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, that underlines the importance of exchange, cultural and Urban life for the development of a knowledge and research Campus. The challenge to design new building within Novartis is big, but designing on the Elsasserstrasse is even more challenging, in addition to the Campus context, there is the city environment that we should consider. This book is about the process of the design of a Laboratory and offices building along the Elsasserstrasse, for Novartis Campus. Our project has to deal with two opposite situations: the privacy status of the Campus versus the public and open city of Basel. That’s how the title: The Gateway has been attributed to the project. In fact, it is the transition between Basel and Novartis Campus, privacy and openness, order and disorder. A Campus made of laboratories, offices, place of research but most of all, a place for sharing, working and discovering at the same time thanks to a proper environment. An environment that is closed; like a beauty in a shell that Novartis staff and few visitors can only enjoy. So, when it comes to design close to the street and public space that belongs to the city, private and public should meet smartly to respect both context. In the process, we will learn more about the Novartis Campus context and the urban potential that will impact our deign. The building that we will develop is the first in its kind, as it is located close to the border, with the street. The other spots around the border do not have existing building from Novartis yet. So, our design is a step forward in bringing people closer to Novartis, enhancing the transition from private to public. We are dealing with Urban context and through the analysis we learn how to share the Spirit of Novartis to the public. As an innovative campus we learn more about the ideal spatial organization for scientists and researchers. Architecture meets science and the result is a model campus restricted but open at the same time with a high quality of life in which it places human first. That quality can be achieved only through research programs and adequate analysis of the materials and technological concept. This project covers a metropolitan to detail scale analysis.

"ELSASSERSTRASSE 156" e il punto d'incontro tra la città pubblica di Basilea e il campus privato di Novartis. Un Campus innovativo come Novartis ha tutto per mostrare come dovrebbe essere un Campus aziendale. Pensiamo a uno spazio urbano efficiente, un contesto con parchi, fiumi, industrie e un luogo che è un parco giochi per architetti famosi; Basilea è in possesso di un Campus strategico, grazie al piano generale progettato da Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, che sottolinea l'importanza dello scambio, della vita culturale e urbana per lo sviluppo di un campus di conoscenza e ricerca. La sfida di progettare un nuovo edificio all'interno di Novartis è grande, ma progettare sulla Elsasserstrasse è ancora più difficile, oltre al contesto Campus, c'è l'ambiente urbano che dovremmo prendere in considerazione. Questo libro parla del processo di progettazione di un laboratorio e di uffici sulla “Elsasserstrasse”, per Novartis Campus. Il nostro progetto si tratta di due situazioni opposte: lo stato di privacy del Campus rispetto al pubblico e alla città aperta di Basilea. È così che il titolo: Il Gateway è stato attribuito al progetto. In effetti, è la transizione tra Basilea e Novartis Campus, la privacy e l'apertura, l'ordine e il disordine. Un campus fatto di laboratori, uffici, luoghi di ricerca ma soprattutto, un luogo di condivisione, di lavoro e di scoperta allo stesso tempo grazie a un ambiente adeguato. Un ambiente che è chiuso; come una bellezza in una conchiglia che lo staff di Novartis e pochi visitatori possono solo godere. Quindi, quando si tratta di progettare vicino alla strada e lo spazio pubblico che appartiene alla città, privato e pubblico dovrebbero incontrarsi in modo intelligente per rispettare entrambi i contesti. Nel processo, impareremo di più sul contesto del Campus Novartis e sul potenziale urbano che influenzerà il nostro degno riconoscimento. L'edificio che svilupperemo è il primo nel suo genere, in quanto si trova vicino al confine, con la strada. Gli altri punti intorno al confine non hanno ancora edifici esistenti da Novartis. Pertanto, il nostro design rappresenta un passo in avanti per avvicinare le persone a Novartis, migliorando la transizione da privato a pubblico. Abbiamo a che fare con il contesto urbano e attraverso l'analisi impariamo come condividere lo spirito di Novartis al pubblico. Come campus innovativo, apprendiamo di più sull'organizzazione spaziale ideale per scienziati e ricercatori. L'architettura incontra la scienza e il risultato è un campus modello limitato ma aperto allo stesso tempo con un'alta qualità della vita in cui pone l'uomo al primo posto. Questa qualità può essere raggiunta solo attraverso programmi di ricerca e un'analisi adeguata dei materiali e del concetto tecnologico. Questo progetto copre un'analisi di scala da metropolitano a dettaglio.
