Atarazana. A cultural and housing complex

ATARAZANA: A CULTURAL AND HOUSING CONMPLEX The Esso houses in the city of Hamburg used to be an important component for the urban life of the city, this mixed-use building contained commercial facilities and popular clubs known for attracting locals and visitors. One main element of the complex was the petrol station from the Esso Company, pretty known for its minimarket shop that was working 24/7. In 2013 due to structural failures, the Esso houses had to be demolished and the inhabitants of the 110 apartments were removed from the dwellings. Not just the former inhabitants were missing their houses but also the city was missing an important traditional place of social encounters. In the same year of the demolition, the municipality creates the “Plan BUDE” in order to answer the question of how to replace what has been gone. This plan gathers a number of professionals such us: urban planners, sociologists, and artists, they collect the needs from the community and create a document that concludes the main needs for the new project at the plot of the demolished Esso houses. The project proposed on this thesis has the Plan BUDE as a background or a starting point for the design of the whole complex. The aim of the architecture is to generate interesting relationships between public and private activities such as social encounters among neighbours and visitors, or visual relationships that provoke new dynamics on the urban environment. Different activities occurring at the same time can create a better quality for living in the city.

ATARAZANA: UN CONVESSO CULTURALE E ALLOGGIO Le case Esso nella città di Amburgo erano una componente importante per il vivere urbano della città, questo edificio a uso misto conteneva strutture commerciali e locali famosi, conosciuti per attrarre abitanti e visitatori. Uno degli elementi principali del complesso era la stazione di servizio della società Esso, conosciuta per il suo negozio di minimarket che funzionava 24 ore su 24, 7 giorni su 7. Nel 2013 a causa di cedimenti strutturali, le case di Esso dovettero essere demolite e gli abitanti dei 110 appartamenti vennero rimossi dalle abitazioni. Non solo agli ex abitanti mancavano le loro case ma anche alla città mancava un importante luogo tradizionale di incontri sociali. Nello stesso anno della demolizione, il comune crea il "Piano BUDE" per rispondere alla domanda su come sostituire ciò che è stato rimosso. Questo piano riunisce un numero di professionisti come noi: urbanisti, sociologi e artisti, raccolgono le esigenze della comunità e creano un documento che conclude le principali esigenze del nuovo progetto sulla trama delle demolite case Esso. Il progetto proposto su questa tesi ha come base il Piano BUDE o un punto di partenza per la progettazione dell'intero complesso. Lo scopo dell'architettura è generare relazioni interessanti tra attività pubbliche e private come gli incontri sociali tra vicini e visitatori, o relazioni visive che provocano nuove dinamiche nell'ambiente urbano. Diverse attività che si verificano allo stesso tempo possono creare una migliore qualità per vivere in città.
