Aleppo revitalisation. Urban and architectural redevelopment of Aleppo after the civil war

One of the oldest yet most contentious concepts in the study of Islamic history and culture is that of the Islamic City. A number of factors played decisive roles in coordinating and shaping the plan and form of the Islamic city. I started my research by studying and analyzing Islamic cities and possible regulations that are defining them in general, but mostly spatial and urban organization within the city. The background studies provided information and knowledge about the already established set of rules by its inhabitants which were used as a guideline for this project and rebuilding Aleppo. We can realize that the war, as the most intense form of human conflicts, has not only changed the landscape of the Aleppo but also profoundly affected the people and community’s daily life. The aim of the project is to heal the interrupted permeability of the city by showing its potentials and references at urban scale. The theme “revitalisation” has been interrogated in order to achieve optimum results in terms of urban networks, infrastructure, architecture details and social dynamics. In ancient times, as well as in the world of Islam, the short-lived awareness of citizenship is not connected to the visible materiality of the urbs. The project proposal outlines the spatial relationship with the urban context by an articulation of architectonic spaces. Flexibility of the spaces targets to give an opportunity to people of Aleppo to modify the spaces by themselves and build their own city within period. This war has been a massacre for all, destroying the economy, public infrastructure and landmarks. But the biggest change was created in the mindset of the people, changing them on a more abstract social level. Yet their culture and rituals, which are based on accumulation and re-appropriation, could connect if a social and cultural common ground is formed.

Uno dei arbostismi più antichi e controversi nello studio della storia e della cultura islamica è quello della “città islamica”. Una serie di fattori ha giocato un ruolo decisivo nel coordinare e plasmare l’organizzazione e la forma della città islamica. Ho iniziato la ricerca studiando e analizzando le città islamiche e le possibile regole che la definiscono in generale, ma principalmente l'organizzazione spaziale e urbana all'interno della città. Gli studi storici hanno fornito informazioni e conoscenze sul set di regole già stabilito dai suoi abitanti che sono state utilizzate come linee guida per questo progetto e per la ricostruzione di Aleppo. La guerra, come forma più intensa di conflitti umani, non ha solo cambiato il panorama di Aleppo, ma ha anche profondamente influenzato la vita quotidiana della gente e della comunità. Lo scopo del progetto è quello ridefinire la permeabilità interrotta della città mettendo in risalto le sue potenzialità usando le regole del passato. Il tema "rivitalizzazione" è stato ricercato al fine di ottenere risultati ottimali in termini di organizzacione della città, infrastrutture, dettagli architettonici e dinamiche sociali. Nell'antichità, così come nel mondo dell'Islam, la cultura islamica porta il cittadino a non dare importanza gli aspetti della città. La proposta progettuale delinea la relazione spaziale con il contesto urbano attraverso un'articolazione di spazi architettonici. La flessibilità degli spazi punta a dare la possibilità alle persone di Aleppo di modificare da soli gli spazi e costruire la propria città nel tempo. La guerra è stata un massacro per tutti, distruggendo l'economia, le infrastrutture pubbliche e i landmarks della città. Ma il cambiamento più grande è stato creato nella mentalità delle persone, cambiando la loro stessa cultura che ora devno recuperare. I loro usi e costumi altre i loro rituali potranno essere recuperati anche grazie alla ricostruzione della città in modo da ridefinire e ricuperare anche i propri abitanti.
