The old city of Aleppo is one of the largest cities of Syria, and one of the most significant historical and cultural centres of the world. Located in the very cradle of civilization on the planet, it has passed through the hands of many of the largest empires in the history of human kind, always serving as one of their major trading and political hubs. Unfortunately, the city today represents a mere shadow of its former self, as it has been left devastated by the Syrian civil war. Although the civil war in Syria is still raging, the city of Aleppo has thankfully not seen any major conflicts in a long while. With the dust settled, the overall damage done to the city’s infrastructure and historically valuable buildings can finally be seen, and sadly, very little of the old city still stands. As its buildings carried thousands of years of history on their shoulders, the task of rebuilding them is neither simple nor taken lightly, and any proposal of reconstruction must keep the cultural and architectural tradition of ancient Islamic cities in mind. Therefore, the in-depth analysis of the typological elements, urban fabric, and architectural elements provided within this thesis are essential to the coherent understanding of the reconstruction proposal. The project aims to provide an aesthetically and culturally appropriate solution to the many problems which it faces today, maintaining the image of the old city, while providing contemporary and innovative solutions to certain issues which have plagued the old cities of the Islamic Middle-East for a long time. The overall goal of the thesis is to contribute, however humbly and minorly, to the city and the people of Aleppo, who have suffered a kind of devastation that leaves a deep wound on the city and its people.

Abstract
The overall goal of the thesis is to contribute, however humbly and minorly, to the city and the people of Aleppo, who have suffered a kind of devastation that leaves a deep wound on the city and its people.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
