The Jewish ramp museum of Prague

Paper’s theme regards the outcome of the main analysis and research carried out during the process of the whole work. The research identifies and analyzes the main characteristics that made the possibility to make the design proposal. The topic was to examine and analyze the possibilities of implementation of an architectural design proposal in a very contradicted site area, that was the Old Town of Prague, the ancient Jewish Ghetto called Josefov with the cemetery and the synagogues. The contradicted cultural difference existed in the heart of Prague which makes the context complicated, but on the other hand interesting and intriguing for the analysis and research. The project was done by series of analysis and investigation of cartographic, iconographic and bibliography sources, which make it possible to analyze and define the urban evolution and history of the city, main characteristics of the urban composition of the Old Town of Prague and identify the context for the proposal. The research paper divided into five main parts: First, it shows the urban evolution of the city of Prague in order to have a deep understanding of the transformations on a big scale and how different periods of the city shape nowadays Prague. The second part goes in a deep research analysis of Jewish culture of Prague. Particularly, it analyzes the history of different Ghettos, their emergence and influence. Main context is the Old Town of Prague, and Josefov Jewish quarter. The third part is dedicated to the micro-urban level of the city, as the main focus is the urban transformation of the Old Town. It was necessary in order to understand the main urban elements that are part of the existing situation of the context and how they changed over time. In this chapter all the figures done by us through the deep research on the historical maps. The fourth part is the brief analysis of the concepts we adopted in Architecture and urban context. Last part is the design proposal that was based on the research that we have done. In this chapter the materials of the project will be shown.

Il tema del paper è il risultato delle principali analisi e ricerche svolte durante il lavoro. La ricerca identifica ed analizza le principali caratteristiche che ci hanno dato la possibilità di effetture la proposta di design. L'argomento trattato esamina ed analizza le possibilità di implementazione di una proposta di progettazione architettonica in un'area del sito molto contraddittoria, ovvero la Città Vecchia di Praga, l'antico ghetto ebraico chiamato Josefov con il cimitero e le sinagoghe. La contraddittoria differenza culturale che esisteva nel cuore di Praga crea un contesto complicato, ma d'altra parte interessante ed intrigante per l'analisi e la ricerca. Il progetto è stato svolto mediante una serie di analisi ed indagini di carattere cartografico, iconografico ed attrverso la consltazione di fonti bibliografiche, che rendono possibile analizzare l'evoluzione urbana e la storia della città, identificando il contesto per la proposta. Il documento di ricerca si divide in cinque parti principali: In primo luogo, mostra l'evoluzione urbana della città di Praga per avere una profonda comprensione delle sue trasformazioni su larga scala e su come a volte cambia la forma della città di Praga al giorno d'oggi. La seconda parte entra in un'analisi approfondita della cultura ebraica di Praga. In particolare, analizza la storia di diversi Ghetti, la loro comparsa ed influenza. Il contesto principale è il centro storico di Praga ed il quartiere ebraico di Josefov. La terza parte è dedicata al livello micro-urbano della città, in quanto l'obiettivo principale è la trasformazione urbana del centro storico ed è necessario avere una migliore comprensione di come affrontarlo. In questo capitolo vengono mostrate tutte le figure da noi prodotte, attraverso la ricerca approfondita sulle mappe storiche. La quarta parte è la breve analisi dei concetti che abbiamo adottato in architettura ed all’interno del contesto urbano. L'ultima parte del design è una proposta basata sulla ricerca che abbiamo effettuato. In questo capitolo saranno mostrati i materiali del progetto.
