This thesis project deals with the theme of artistic residence proposed by the competition Inspiration Hostel, which translates into the provision of temporary accommodation for "art workers" of various artistic backgrounds: from the painter to the sculptor, from the musician to the dancer, in an increasingly widespread format that closely combines life with work. The following theme was then expanded with functions aimed not only at the protagonists of the sector, but potentially usable by the citizens, with exhibition spaces and workshops to bring art within the everyday sphere of everyone. The project has therefore assumed the characteristics of a real artistic cultural center that acts as an attractor both for the artists who gravitate around the city, and for anyone who wishes to express their artistic sensibility. A place that responds to the obvious need for space for inspiration and artistic meditation by temporarily abandoning the hectic routine of everyday life. The choice to locate the project in the city and in particular in Milan, to the detriment of a quieter and more isolated place, is justified by the assumption, in our opinion essential, of inserting the artists in a wider system that allows them to come into contact with travelers, patrons, collectors and the public, taking advantage of the artistic vitality of the city. The project site was identified in a building that is part of the vast patrimony of vacant and abandoned buildings Milan is saturated with. In particular Zona Tortona, a suburb that once used to be surrounded by factories and industrial plants and today is world-known as the creativity district. This is where we identified a typical “casa di ringhiera” (council flats with communal balconies for the working class typical of north Italy) dating back to the late nineteenth century, overlooking Naviglio Grande and Baden-Powell park. The tender launched by Milan’s City Council for the recovery and enhancement of the building gave us the opportunity for this project of redevelopment of the existing building combined with the cultural artistic program of the “Inspiration Hostel” competition. Imagining a future connection from Via Bergognone crossing the walkway along Naviglio Grande and at the same time joining with the abandoned “Scalo di Porta Genova”, we were able to plan a way to include the artists residence within the widespread net of exhibitions, events, workshops and galleries linked to Milan’s Fuorisalone and encompass the Navigli area within the district of fashion, design and communication. All this as an attempt to bring back to life the artistic and bohemian vibes that have always distinguished the Navigli area, thanks to its romantic boutiques, “case di ringhiera” and picturesque canals, a source of inspiration for artists and travellers from all over the world.

Abstract
All this as an attempt to bring back to life the artistic and bohemian vibes that have always distinguished the Navigli area, thanks to its romantic boutiques, “case di ringhiera” and picturesque canals, a source of inspiration for artists and travellers from all over the world.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
