Stadtbibliothek. A reading of the city and a library in the park for the historic city of Graz, Austria

The premise of this thesis project is the design of a new central public library for the city of Graz, Austria. The city’s library branches are currently distributed in pre-existing buildings throughout the city, lacking in a central building that both contains the multitude of spaces inherent to the contemporary public library and that asserts its own architectural identity. The city of Graz itself has a long and layered past, with a medieval core that is still at the heart of the city. The choice of site - at the edge of both the historic center and the city’s main green space, the Stadtpark, and bordered by both a late-Renaissance gate and the most significant remnant of the city’s historic fortification wall - allows the project to also address questions of how we build today in confrontation with the historic city. Starting from studies of the layered urban morphology of Graz’s historic center and the typological system that constitutes the Stadtpark, this project addresses the insertion of a new public monument into existing historic fabric in a way that reflects and augments the collective memory of the city. The result is the design of a public library building that learns from its context and that, through a careful act of architectural composition, seeks to offer a new and meaningful contribution to the city of Graz.

La premessa di questa tesi è la progettazione di una nuova biblioteca pubblica centrale per la città di Graz, Austria. Le filiali della biblioteca pubblica sono attualmente distribuite in edifici preesistenti in tutta la città, privi di un edificio centrale che contiene la moltitudine di spazi che costuiscono la biblioteca pubblica contemporanea e che possiede la sua propria identità architettonica. La città di Graz stessa ha un passato lungo e complesso, con un centro storico che ancora oggi costituisce il cuore della città. Il sito selezionato sta al limite sia del centro storico che dello spazio verde principale di Graz, lo Stadtpark, ed è delimitato da una porta del tardo Rinascimento e dal resto più significativo del muro di fortificazione della città. Questo consente al progetto di affrontare delle domande su come costruiamo oggi in relazione alla città storica. Partendo dagli studi sulla morfologia urbana del centro storico di Graz e dal sistema tipologico che costituisce lo Stadtpark, questo progetto affronta l’inserimento di un nuovo monumento pubblico nel tessuto storico in modo da riflettere e accrescere la memoria collettiva della città. Il risultato è la progettazione di una biblioteca pubblica che impara dal suo contesto e che, attraverso un'azione consapevole di composizione architettonica, cerca di offrire un contributo nuovo e significativo alla città di Graz.
