A thousand faces that make reading and understanding its places enigmatic. The air in Warsaw is heavy, its story unspeakable. The vast, dispersive and, above all, empty squares. A controversial capital of Eastern Europe that manifests its peculiarities from the first approach, reflecting the complex and disarming theme of the immense construction of the contemporary city. It is sufficient to walk around the city to perceive a generic sense of estrangement that hovers indistinctly in the great avenues as in the secondary streets, up to the area of ​​the ex-ghetto. The annoyingly uneven ground seems to hide an intrusive historical reality that tries to emerge, an unresolved conflict that the city seems to hide with difficulty. If along the roads this remains only a sensation, it is in public space, where the city reveals itself, to become tension. The buildings are immersed in an interstitial void, a no man's land that, in its expansions, puts a strain on the ideal human measure, between abrupt changes of scale and scenes from different eras that do not seem to dialogue at all. It is with the specific intention of revealing the profound structure of this city that this thesis moves. Through a new and morphological reading of public spaces, the phases of the capital's history are retraced, starting from the time of its division with the creation of the ghetto in 1939, up to the most recent results. The phenomenon of division ignites the comparison with cities of different history but with common urban facts, consequent to the division. Warsaw thus becomes an emblematic case of the contemporary urban project, in the proposal for a memorial in one of the most significant places in the city, where all forms of division seem to take place. The past thus becomes a tool for understanding and building a conscious present in its history and with an attentive look at the fast dynamics of the growing city. At the base of all this, a formal necessity: an alternative response that overcomes the amorphous and indifferent development of today's Warsaw through the expressive force of an architecture that takes on the present and where all the forms of the investigated division seem to take place . The purpose of this thesis is the project of activating a conscious dialogue with the past to initiate a transformation of those alienating forms so that they return to being transformative and, above all, present acts. So from a boundary, or from a fragment, it is possible to restart a project by regenerating and modifying the lost past in a new, non-nostalgic but critical form and to place it in a flow of forms, ideas, uses, space and expressiveness .

Mille volti che rendono enigmatica la lettura e la comprensione dei suoi luoghi. L’aria a Varsavia è pesante, la sua storia inenarrabile. Le piazze vaste, dispersive e, soprattutto, vuote. Una controversa capitale dell’Est Europa che manifesta sin dal primo approccio le sue peculiarità, riflettendo il complesso e disarmante tema della costruzione smisurata della città contemporanea. E’ sufficiente passeggiare per la città per percepire un generico senso di straniamento che aleggia indistintamente nei grandi viali come nelle vie secondarie, fino all’area dell’ ex-ghetto. Il suolo fastidiosamente dissestato sembra nascondere un’invadente realtà storica che cerca di emergere, un conflitto irrisolto che la città sembra celare con fatica. Se lungo le strade ciò rimane solo una sensazione, è nello spazio pubblico, laddove la città si rivela, a diventare tensione. Gli edifici sono immersi in un vuoto interstiziale, una terra di nessuno che, nelle sue dilatazioni, mette a dura prova la misura umana ideale, tra bruschi cambi di scala e quinte di diverse epoche che non sembrano affatto dialogare. E’ con il preciso intento di disvelare la struttura profonda di questa città che si muove questa tesi. Attraverso una lettura inedita e morfologica degli spazi pubblici, vengono ripercorse le fasi della storia della capitale, a partire dal momento della sua divisione con la creazione del ghetto nel 1939, fino agli esiti più recenti. Il fenomeno della divisione accende il confronto con città di diversa storia ma con fatti urbani comuni, conseguenti la divisione. Varsavia diviene così caso emblematico del progetto urbano contemporaneo, nella proposta per un memoriale in uno dei luoghi più significativi della città, dove tutte le forme della divisione sembrano avere luogo. Il passato diviene così strumento per la comprensione e la costruzione di un presente cosciente della sua storia e con uno sguardo attento alle veloci dinamiche della città in crescita. Alla base di tutto ciò, una necessità formale: una risposta alternativa che superi lo sviluppo amorfo e indifferente della Varsavia d’oggi attraverso la forza espressiva di un’architettura che si fa carico del presente e dove tutte le forme della divisione indagate sembrano avere luogo. Lo scopo di questa tesi è il progetto di attivazione di un dialogo cosciente con il passato per avviare una trasformazione di quelle forme stranianti affinché tornino ad essere atti trasformativi e, soprattutto, presenti. Per cui da un confine, o da un frammento è possibile rimettere in moto un progetto rigenerando e modificando il passato perduto in una forma nuova, non nostalgica ma critica e per ricollocarlo in un flusso di forme, di idee, di usi, spazio ed espressività.
