Abstract
This proposal to convert an existing historic structure in the center of Rome into an alternative form of housing seeks to demonstrate the importance of design as adaptation rather than trying to solve contemporary dwelling issues through building new structures. To build something new in the center of Rome is virtually impossible, yet the large amount of underutilized spaces, especially in religious complexes, offers new potential for creative adaptation in the struggle to provide for the diverse housing needs of the contemporary city. Monasteries have been built throughout the Italian landscape, and especially in urban centers, and represent a successful form of communal living that has endured for centuries. The monastery typology, with minimal intervention, provides a perfect existing architecture that can be transformed into affordable communal housing. Many of the monasteries in and around Rome now offer short term stays for tourists or guests, as part of the growing hospitality industry. The recent rise of the “Bed and Breakfast” phenomenon, which has been converting people’s homes into hospitality structures, shows how quickly dwelling types can change in central cities. This proposal aims to promote the idea that existing buildings can be adapted for new communal housing needs, providing affordable housing that reinforces the urban vitality of the center while resisting the hospitality spectrum. The Church and Monastery of Saint Bridget (Chiesa e Monastero di Santa Brigida), belongs to the “urban monastery” typology. Located on Piazza Farnese, adjacent to the famous Palazzo Farnese, the convent currently offers short stay accommodation for up to 50 people. Through a redesign of the interiors, this same building could serve as an excellent prototype for converting existing structures in a dense urban context into affordable housing for people with diverse needs.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
