This experimental research titled “Behavior-Based Safety: enhancing the leadership of the supervisor through behavioral science” aims to demonstrate how the figure of the supervisor, as defined by the Italian accident prevention regulation, is incomplete with respect to his main task: vigilance in terms of jobs security of his own employees. Before commenting on further detail on this job – the application of the B- BS protocol to a department of a manufacturing industry (Michelin s.p.a.) – the research has shown that Behavior Analysis is a science that through its laws is able to turn a manager into a leader in such a way as to achieve results which can be measured by his employees. In particular, the B-BS protocol was described as a tool based on: - A system of observations carried out by the employees, who issue immediate behavioral feedbacks to their colleagues; - A system of security meetings held regularly in order to show the results obtained with the feedback system and set new goals, which can help the supervisor – personified by a Safety Leader – to monitor his employees’ working activity. There are numerous studies in the literature that demonstrate the effectiveness of the B-BS protocol. However, none of them seems to have investigated its usefulness in relation to the figure of the supervisor, nor much less whether the implementation of the protocol can make it possible to compensate for the absence of the supervisor, in accordance with the limitations described above. For this reason, depending on the context under study and more precisely on the role of the supervisor of Michelin, it was decided to examine how presence could influence the behavior of his workers. Thus, the hypothesis of research are: - Hypothesis 1: the presence of an immediate feedback on safety attitudes increases the percentage of the personnel’s safe behaviors. - Hypothesis 2: during the baseline phase and in the absence of the supervisor, the percentage of the personnel’s safe behaviors decreases. - Hypothesis 3: during the feedback phase and in the absence of the supervisor, the percentage of the personnel’s safe behaviors does not decrease. Through a statistical analysis of the data collected and thanks to the observations conducted throughout the period of research, the following results have been achieved: - Hypothesis 1 and 2 have been confirmed - Hypothesis 3 has been rejected It can be concluded that the B-BS protocol is able to increase the number of safe behaviors while at the same time representing an effective tool for the supervisor’s surveillance activities through the creation of safety values. As this is the first research in this field, further field studies are encouraged in order to consolidate the results already obtained.

Abstract
As this is the first research in this field, further field studies are encouraged in order to consolidate the results already obtained.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
