Platform businesses : a review of recent literature

Purpose and value – The present thesis aims at presenting the state of the art in the platform businesses field. In doing so, it wants to provide a guide for the main strategical variables characterizing new platform businesses and create awareness regarding their related problems. Starting from this analysis, this thesis tries to provide a contribution towards a more sustainable approach in adopting these new models. Methodology – To conduct this study, a review of the present literature has been executed while trying to be focused on the most recent papers. The main results therefore have been classified and reorganized with a consistent approach in: (1) basic concepts enabling the understanding of platform businesses, (2) strategical variables and models, (3) problem arising. Limits and future research – Because of the novelty, the fast pace and the diversification that are characterizing platform businesses, it emerges a fragmented state of the art that is limiting scholars and managers in understanding this environment. This thesis wants to overcome this restriction presenting in a structured way the general theories and also organizing the main concepts in the platform businesses field. Finally, a future research direction is here proposed starting from the analyzed unfair conditions of platform-workers, which emerge as one of the main problems in this field.

Scopo e valore – Questa tesi ha l’obiettivo di presentare lo stato dell’arte della letteratura riguardo ai business di piattaforma. Nel fare ciò, essa vuole fornire una guida che faciliti la comprensione delle principali variabili strategiche che li caratterizzano e, allo stesso tempo, sensibilizzare sui problemi che essi comportano. A partire da tale analisi, con questa tesi si vuole provare a contribuire allo sviluppo di approcci sostenibili nell’adozione di questi nuovi modelli di business emergenti. Metodologia – Per condurre questo studio, è stata eseguita una revisione della letteratura prevalentemente concentrata sugli ultimi anni. Da qui, sono stati classificati e riorganizzati in modo strutturato i principali risultati trovati, definendo così tre blocchi concettuali: (1) concetti base che permettono la comprensione dei business di piattaforma, (2) variabili strategiche e modelli, (3) problemi emergenti. Limiti e ricerche future – A causa della novità, del ritmo veloce e dell’alto grado di diversificazione che caratterizzano i business di piattaforma, dalla letteratura emerge uno scenario frammentato che limita gli studiosi e i manager nel comprendere questo contesto. Questa tesi vuole tentare di superare questo limite, presentando in un modo strutturato le principali teorie generali e i concetti propri dei business di piattaforma. Infine, partendo dalla condizione dei lavoratori all’interno della piattaforme, che emerge come uno dei principali problemi in questo ambito, viene proposta una direzione per le ricerche future.
