Lake Chilwa Basin in Malawi is a fragile ecosystem composed by an open water area of varying dimensions surrounded by wetlands. It is exposed to growing pressure by extreme weather events like droughts and floods and increase in population. Periodic lake recessions, soil degradation and unpredictable weather events have an impact on agriculture and fishing, the principal economical resources for a population of 1.5 million people, and endanger their livelihood. Aim of the project is to contribute in restoring the basin’s ecosystem and enhancing resilience of the population, promoting actions that could mitigate the effects of the problems caused by climate change and fight food insecurity in the area. These actions are based on technologies such as rain water collectors, controlled wetland systems, photovoltaic panels and agri aquaculture systems and improved fish driers. All these technologies are in a synergic relation with the three elements of the project : a market to develop economical and social interactions; systems of agri aquaculture to provide food security; wetland systems to mitigate flooding and , finally, the development of barrier islands both as prevention and barrier for floods and as sites for permanent villages for fishermen.
Il bacino del lago Chilwa in Malawi è un ecosistema fragile composto da un’area lacustre di dimensioni variabili circondata da terre umide. E’ esposto a una pressione ambientale crescente a causa di eventi meteorologici estremi quali siccità ed inondazioni e dell’aumento della popolazione. Recessioni periodiche del lago, degradazione dei suoli ed eventi climatici imprevedibili hanno un impatto su agricoltura e pesca, le principali risorse economiche per una popolazione di un milione e mezzo di individui, e ne mettono in pericolo la sopravvivenza. Scopo del progetto è di contribuire a ripristinare l’ecosistema del bacino e di aumentare la resilienza della popolazione attraverso azioni che possano mitigare gli effetti dei problemi causati dai cambiamenti climatici, e di combattere la carenza alimentare nell’area. Queste azioni sono basate su tecnologie quali collettori di acqua piovana, sistemi di controllo delle acque nelle terre umide e nelle zone paludose, pannelli fotovoltaici e sistemi di agricoltura e di piscicoltura, e strumenti più efficaci per l’essicazione dei prodotti della pesca. Tutte queste tecnologie entrano in un rapporto di sinergia con i tre elementi del progetto: uno spazio dedicato al mercato per sviluppare interazioni economiche e sociali; sistemi di agricoltura e di piscicoltura per la sicurezza alimentare; sistemi di controllo delle acque nelle zone umide per mitigare gli effetti delle inondazioni; e, infine, la costruzione di isole a formare barriere contro le inondazioni e come luoghi di creazione di villaggi permanenti.
