Abstract
The study of this thesis explores the theme of architecture in refurbishment of industrial heritage. Vacant and abandoned industrial buildings are a symptom of urban decline linked to various problems. The effect of globalisation of industries in the world and in Portugal as well, has became a relevant issue, causing social, environmental, economical and cultural problems. these practice is willing to determine use of some abstract notions like “potential”and “possibility” as analytical frameworks to create architectural concepts within which to preserve the collective memory. focusing on the Former shipyards of Sao Jacinto, in Portugal, the intentions are to bring back the shipyards to the city, evoking forgotten memories which are very much linked to the collective memory of the context. Motivations are to liberate the shipyard from his isolation which as a matter of fact in a bigger scale have resulted in the isolation of the city it self. Reinforcing its relations with the city and the surrendering natural elements water and the dunes reserve is another key motivation. there fore the intervention intents to introduces itself as an extension of the city fallowing its urban characteristics with very careful practice in respect of the remaining ruins. the site laying along the Ria ( Aveiro lagoon), on his west, and due to it’s essence whether in the way its oriented to the water, whether for the physical presence of the ducks, has an strong and important engagement with water. The new project provides an stronger engagement with the ducks and the water element by reactivation the ducks not only as their industrial function, but also as urban public space. The project wants to provide an opportunity for the development of the abandoned industrial heritage as well as taking a step towards preservation of it’s influential cultural aspects.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
