Open forms. Residuality and impermanence of the metropolis

The work is configured as a theoretical, enumerative study directly applied to the project, regarding the cities of Milan, Shanghai and São Paulo. The aim is that the latter may be red as an exemplary model to advance further researches in other similar circumstances. Mainly we grew fond for certain spaces forgotten by the large infrastructural scale project, the arteries with which cities breathe, increase and survive, multiply and expand. Often few square meters without purpose and without use, places with great potential which scream for an ever recognized dignity, every day at the glaze everyone. Pieces of public soil cut out and left apart from the meaning of the place and of any kind of social liveability. Here we must clarify the difference between empty space and precisely residual space. An empty space is taken as a case study, only when it emphasizes itself the bad thinking of a function and the relationship with the context, thus losing value and attractiveness. But mainly here we intend to consider all those areas that, from the beginning, never had a conscious and defined design with an effective and functional form, places born without reason, simply because they escaped from the speculative logic of the market. We have tried to give a definition to them, being a subtle and still very elusive topic, and to visualize the typologies in the format of a mapped catalog, together with the design of temporary structures that can politely occupy and lead to the regeneration of these environments. The final product are three proposals for concrete and effective actions, one for each city, different for typology and size range, always with the aim of developing an exemplary strategy, solid and applicable to the most varied and particular cases. They are projects of real structures, inclusive of constructive and spatial logics, easy to assemble and disassemble, conceived as individual autonomous and finished elements, ready to be multiplied and adapted to the various complexities and needs. It is not the design of a program or a specific function. It`s the project of the mutability of a space, of the rapid change of users’ needs and of the optimized growth over the time of a form of life made and recognized in the place. The research was also an opportunity to focus on some issues that we believe central to the changes going through the post-contemporary city, so that to conduct an investigation starting from the human scale, often omitted or underestimated by urbanization designs. The attempt is to stimulate a recognizable and reusable approach methodology, to be made available to institutions, associations and all those who intend to grasp from the mistake the opportunity to experiment and give breath to urban transformations, starting from the instinctive forces coming from below. To rethink a new narrative of the metropolis, starting from the body of man and his perception. To think of the public world as a fluctuating mix of public and private affairs, of events rather than obstacles, of organized density rather than of efficient generality.

Il lavoro si configura come uno studio teorico, enumerativo e applicato al progetto, sulle città di Milano, Shanghai e San Paolo, col fine che quest`ultimo possa poi prestare da modello esemplare per avanzare ulteriori ricerche in altre simili circostanze. Principalmente ci siamo affezionati a certi spazi dimenticati dal progetto della grande scala infrastrutturale, le arterie con le quali le città respirano, crescono e sopravvivono, si moltiplicano e si espandono. Spesso pochi metri quadrati senza scopo e senza uso, luoghi che promettono grandi potenzialità e urlano ad una dignità mai riconosciuta, che sono sotto gli occhi di tutti e di tutti i giorni. Pezzi di suolo pubblico ritagliati e lasciati in disparte dal significato di luogo e di alcun tipo di vivibilità sociale. Qui si deve chiarire la differenza tra spazio vuoto e appunto spazio residuale. È preso come caso di studio uno spazio vuoto, solo quando esso stesso enfatizza il cattivo pensamento di una funzione e del suo rapporto col luogo, perdendo quindi di valore e attrattività. Ma principalmente qui si intende considerare tutte quelle aree che, sin da principio, non hanno mai avuto un disegno consapevole e definito di forma effettiva e funzionale, luoghi nati senza ragione, semplicemente perché scappati dalle logiche speculative del mercato. Abbiamo cercato di darne una definizione, essendo un argomento sottile e ancora molto sfuggente, e visualizzarne le tipologie nel formato di un catalogo mappato, assieme alla progettazione di strutture temporanee che possano occupare educatamente ed indurre alla rigenerazione di questi ambienti. Il prodotto finale sono tre proposte di azioni concrete ed effettuali, una per città e differenti per classificazione e range dimensionale, sempre con l`obiettivo di sviluppare una strategia esemplare, solida e applicabile ai casi più svariati e particolari. Sono progetti di vere e proprie strutture, comprendenti logiche costruttive e spaziali assieme, facili da montare e smontare, pensate come elementi singoli autonomi e finiti, pronti per essere moltiplicati e adattati alle varie complessità e alle variabili necessità. Non è il progetto di un programma o di una funzione. È il progetto della mutevolezza di uno spazio, del rapido cambiamento dei bisogni degli utenti e della crescita ottimizzata lungo il tempo di una forma di vita compiuta e riconosciuta nel luogo. La ricerca è stata un’occasione, inoltre, per mettere a fuoco alcune questioni che riteniamo centrali sui cambiamenti che attraversano la città post-contemporanea e per condurre un’indagine a partire dalla scala umana, spesso omessa o sottovalutata dai disegni di urbanizzazione. Il tentativo è quello di incentivare una metodologia di approccio riconoscibile e riutilizzabile, da mettere a disposizione delle istituzioni, delle associazioni e tutti i soggetti che intendono cogliere nell`errore l`opportunità di sperimentare e dare respiro alle trasformazioni urbane a partire dalle forze istintive provenienti dal basso. Per ripensare ad una nuova narrativa della metropoli, a partire dal corpo dell`uomo e della sua percezione. Per pensare al mondo pubblico come un fluttuante mescolarsi di affari pubblici e privati, di eventi più che di ostacoli, di densità organizzata più che di genericità efficienti.
