Military dependents’ village is the outcome of history which has its unique architectural form and cultural background. Soldiers and civilians from different provinces of mainland China lived together, mixed different life and cultural elements, gradually forming a sense of belonging. This has been a symbol of modern ethnic immigration and integration in Taiwan. It is also an important Taiwanese cultural heritage. However, many military dependents’ villages have been demolished one after another and rebuilt new buildings in today's urban development process. This research takes Matsu New Village as an example, investigates the possibility of conservation and reuse of military dependents’ villages to protect and activate this space.
